Hello,

I'm still new to my recent purchase and I've noticed (but never asked) why my Oct 1987 dated FJ62 has a "Throttle" knob on the dash. When I yank on it, nothing happens and a friend checked while I pulled and nothing moved!

What gives???? I'm curious...!!!

Thanks a bunch!
James

The throttle knob allows your vehicle to hold higher RPM without using the gas pedal. If you had a PTO winch this would be useful but since we live in the US we have a throttle and nothing to use it for.

If you have your buddy press the gas pedal, you will see ontop of the engine. There will be a lever that moves, there are two cables attached to it. One is pedal, other is the throttle cable. When I first got My truck mine wasn't tight. I moved those nuts that hold it on to adjust it so it doesn't pull on the throttle cable, but does when you pull the knob.

Hmmmm!!!

Thanks for the replies!

I guess mine is not connected as my buddy who's familiar with FJ's and Toyota's in general knew where to look and saw nothing move or hooked up.

Hmmm....I'll have to look into this further....thanks again for the replies!

Regards,
James

Someone once called it the 62's appendix. It is good for warming up the truck on cold mornings though.

The cable can and does break. Some attached to a tab/extension on the top of brake pedal. You can see a line from throttle hole to the tab on the gas pedal. Good luck. Dan

High idle knob when jumping another vehicle or after you get a jumpstart.

I use mine so I can remove my shoes while cruising on the highway.

Because we are members of an elite society of fuel injected throttle knobbers :D

In a flat state, it works as a cruise control.

The cable attaches to a tab on the gas pedal. Yours may be broken.

You can use it to increase idle if running a winch, or to make the engine warm up faster. On flat ground you can use it to maintain speed somewhat.

I'm curious, does an FJ60 have a throttle knob in addition to the choke knob?

There is a spot to mount one, right hand side of the underdash. On my 84 there is a plug in place. Looks to be the same size as the choke knob from the blurry pictures I've seen. As has been mentioned, was supposed to be there for PTO units, but I've heard of folks using it for crawlers, or really dangerous cruise control. :)

Cruise Control???

Really....a cruise control??? WOW!!!

I'd like to see how this attaches so that I can see if this is indeed broken or just not clipped in from the PO. Any pics anyone can share???

I'd appreciate that very much!

Cheers,
James

Problem with it is that its a "throttle lock" the same as some motorcycles use. You are cruising down the highway, in 4th (or 5th if you are really lucky) and you pull the knob, which locks the gas pedal in position and you're crusing alone at 3000 RPM, listening to tunes and feeling good.

Then for whatever reason, something pops up in front of your rig - stopped vehicle, critter, etc. and you have to slam on the brakes and clutch all of a sudden. With the load from the transmission off of the engine, but the throttle still floored, your RPM's jump, and if you are *really* unlucky your old 2F decides that being revved past the redline is a bad thing, and promptly pukes on you.

With motorcycles its worse - I've seen folks biff it with that damn thing locked, and still in gear, just merrily spinning the drive wheel while while they're laying it down. Helluva dangerous situation as at full throttle, you might not stall out as quickly and get body parts caught.

Real CC units are tapped into the brake system, and disengage when you hit the brakes in a panic situation. Not saying that you can't use it as a CC, just that its dangerous for a couple of different reasons.

I agree, use sparingly, and only in the middle of nowhere.

On HJ/BJ60s the throttle knob is also used to allow the engine to idle smoothly in cold weather on startup.

It does work well when used in conjunction with the tilt steering wheel(all the way up)........the steering wheel I mean. ;)
