For the longest time I have been toying with a roof rack design but decided not to do it for now. Basically it is a roof rack with the spare and jerry cans on top by the back. For in town driving it stays up top. For off road and off-camber angles it slides back and down to latch onto the back bumper (custom). You would need some heavy duty sliders - maybe Uni-strut and rollers. If I get bored I might still do this.

Talos, My idea was to run the intake from the engine compartment, through firewall up through the dash, and up through the roof. it would go just above the roof by about 3/4" and have a modified hood scoop protecting and screening it. i would like to try transparent pvc to help a bit with visibility and for cool factor. this would cost around $100 before S/H and involve cutting lots of holes, but would keep a snorkel out of harms way and allow me to see if anything big was on its way to the air filter.

My home made roof rack is made out of Thule load bars and clamps, and a section of metal fence. The load bars go through the fence posts and creates the floor. The fence is from Home Despot. Bought the Thule parts used, under $50. Fence section was under $60? Two sections fit on the roof of the '60. Used it when I took the family to Rubicon Springs. No problems.

this is a pretty smart idea.

you could use the fence piece and modify it from there.
Hmmmm
