so im bored out of my skull, and my cruisers on the wrong continent to wrench on, plus the threads have been a little repetitive lately so i thought id throw out a different thread. Who got a crazy or interesting idea on the back burner that theyve been thinking about building, or are building, that is a bit "thinking out of the box"

Ill start one, been thinking of running a snorkel through the cab, through the dash and roof using clear pvc (for cool factor and visibility)
http://www.clearpvcpipe.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=19

then run a hood scoop on the roof (painting the metal hole and using something like silicone to seal it) something like this
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Xtre...tegoryZ33646QQihZ011QQitemZ320098091965QQrdZ1
except cut off the bottom so rain can run out, and run the pvc above flush of the roof so it doesnt suck air in.

so the hard part (other than taking a hole saw to your dash and roof) would be running air intake through dash and firewall to the air box.

but at least you wouldnt worry about breaking your snorkel on the trail. Anyways what do ya think, and who else has an interesting cruiser mod idea???????????

That would be pretty cool. Or instead of the roof scoop you could just have the intake of the snorkel sticking out of the roof. I remember seeing a pic a while back of a Cruiser that rolled on the trail. Everything was smashed in and the snorkel was still sticking up in one piece. Supposedly they can take quite a beating without breaking. I have thought about running an exhaust that exits out roof level, kind of like how a lot of military hummers have theirs. Don't have a pic, so it's kind of hard to explain what look I am going after.

hmmm, i wonder how and where you could run the exhaust through the roof???
it'd have to be near a pillar to make it look less of an eye-sore, and have to have a ton of insulation to keep the cab from getting to hot, maybe a sleeve with air space between it that would force air to flow around it to keep it cooler in the interior.

If you look at the Hummers, their exhaust comes out from underneath and goes up to roof line on the outside of the body. I'll try and dig up a pic of what I am talking about.

The potential for the exhaust to leak into the interior makes for a bad idea. I've seen engine intakes into the interior however. One set up I saw used a dash vent.

I cannot see any reason to do this unless you have a trashed mud only rig..

Since we're talking out of the box ideas...

Ialways wanted to put a hydraulic pump on my PTO flange, and have QD's at the front and rear to mount things like a water pump or even an auger. But, I don't live on the praries anymore, so no need.

ok...I'll bite on this...

I've been thinking about a storage box that attaches to the spare tire winch. the top would be pressure fit (watertight) onto the box when cranked tight by the winch. it could be made in different sizes to accomadate different schtuff. it would be great for camping with the family, etc...

My interesting project is air driven running boards. Flip a switch and they are slider up and out of the way. Then flip it the other way and they lower to let the kidlets in.........

I was thinking of using receiver hitch size metal and putting it up and down with air jacks.

Other cool ideas..... I want to rig a 7 kilowatt PTO generator to the PTO output on the cruiser. Then I would have a 7kw diesel gen :)

I would mate the trans speed with gears and power from the hand throttle to set up the right combo for the gen.

good place to hide the contra band eh?

pick up FJ65

I am going to chop up my 60 to look like the one below.

Does anyone know whose cruiser this is?

My sawzall can't hardly wait for summer.

My intent is to build my cruiser to play more than DD, and I have a lot of fun building it and modding it, seeing what does or doesnt work. so that is why i am not so concerned with cutting holes in it. Id like to build a second one in the future when ive learned the hard way what does and doesnt work.

I like the different ideas, some of which ive contemplated before.

For the air intake idea, you could - although it might be too small - use the A pillar and just box it in with 18ga sheet metal to do the trick. Then cut a hole at the top for the intake scoop. For the exhaust, if you still have a full length exhaust, you can run it up into the last pillar, close off the vent that goes inside but leave the outside one open for ventilation, and stick the pipe through the roof. That was it should limit the amount of carbon that gets deposited on your paint job.
Other ideas, not really outside of the box, but if you use an AC pump for an air compressor you find 2 small tanks (like the Air compressors at Home Depot) and you can mount them to the side of the frame between the frame and drive shaft. They will be out of the way of rocks and other things, this I will be doing at some point.

i just acquired a rough fj60 a few days ago. The motor is really strong but the body is pretty bad and that is an understatement. I am going to learn to use fiber glass on it and fix everything i can with that and then i am going to create a convertable FJ60 something like the cruiser in Tapage's thread that influenced his creation.

Eventually i plan on having a roll cage fabbed for it and then making my own bikkini top for it

Also i plan on it running 37s probably with some gear reduction. That is just a beggining to it. I always dreamed of doing it before but now that i have an extra cruiser i can do it with out worry of not having something to drive.

What do you guys think about modding a regular roof to a high roof, like the aussie. Then I would cut just the top off so it would open like a maginolia (sp?) roof top tent. There would be an internal roll cage with a platform to sleep on the top. There would also be a hole to climb up into the tent and down into the cruiser.

Someday I would like to do that. It would be just like a pop top camper, but it would look like an aussie high top cruiser.

How does that sound? Any tips too because I think it would be interesting, plus I would get to use the sawzall.

thats a really good take on the roof top tent.build an exo cage but it would double as support for sleeping surface. and a roof rack could stay fastened to the roof without unloading to get to the sleeping area.I think you would have to have a sill around it that sits like a cap on the body, and have some kind of fabric between the 2.

Brownbear, you could run an air tank powered by an A/C pump, with an air solenoid powered when the interior lights go on, so when someone opens a door the steps would extend, and maybe a dash switch as well.

Lunyou, Get chopping up that rig!!

Fantom, i considered boxing in the A-pillar, but in the long run i think the clear PVC would be easier, and i just kind of like the idea of being able to see whats going into your intake, although i bet i'd want to clean it every couple months.

I always thought it would be cool to use some light guage rail from an old railroad as rock sliders on the 60. You would need to do some cutting and welding but it seems plenty of people here have those skills.

Does this have any chance of working?

that thing was on ebay a few years ago(5-6), I think its in canada?

I am kicking around the Idea of fabing my own roof rack not very exciting but with my limeted welding experance it should at least be interesting:eek:

p.s if anyone has pics of thier home made roof rack I would like to see.
