Wholesale auto trans manual lockup kit - anyone tried?

I have one fitted as standard after buying their extreme A442F and compu-shift trans ECU. Considering I don't do any towing, for the most part I'd say it's a WOFTAM. Any benefit it offers for decent control is minimal and I've spent more time trying to figure out why the car runs like crap or stalls when I come to a stop because the dog's paw has knocked the switch on. That's obviously not a fault of the product but it is fair to say the dog has used it more than I have.

I do use it from time to time simply because it's there but I often forget it's activated and when you try to accelerate, you wonder what the hell is going on. Activating the switch on sand does work wonders keeping trans temps down, especially with the wind behind you as that makes everything work that much harder. However, though I often forget about it being there. For my application, it's not something I'd buy specifically. But if you fit a larger percentage of the reasons given for its use, then it's probably money well spent.

thank you all. I knew that this information was out there. I am going to try this on my HDJ80. I will document and report my results here. I use my beloved cruiser mostly for traveling, during winter its snow and glacier tours that are similar to sand driving, and in summers I tow my 1 ton home built 35" camper trailer around bad roads in the highlands :). That is why I want to try this mod.

Just a heads up when trying to contact wholesale auto, I sent them an email and received a response 4 months later then another 7 months later not sure if they responded the first time. If this is what it takes to give them money what is there response when I need tech support for there product. It looks very simple to build this harness with a few simple things. Now I want to figure out how to lock it in third with the torque converter lock on.

Yeah, the "Best Way" to do this would be a system that piggybacks the TCU and senses braking, a need to change gears, etc.

But i don't know that we know enough about the TCU to know when it wants to shift gears.

I am told that the auto will shift gears even if locked. the gear shifting is a bit harsh, thats all. But I will test this....

I am also told that with this mod, you can lock it in 2nd and 3rd.

NOTE! the term "locking" in this context is not -locking in gear- it only prevents the torque converter mechanism from working and making the auto behave more like a manual gearbox, not "slipping" in gears.

I have the full auto A442F and the aftermarket valve body and when shifting from third to D in lockup unless you have some power applied to the throttle the shift will be very harsh... Same thing for downshifting, unless you got quite a bit of throttle going it's really bad.

after driving on beach sand today and seeing how quick the trans temp climbs in the real soft stuff if I give it some boost (22psi) I am thinking of doing this mod, has anyone done it and can tell me if once its switched on with the mod, can you then lock and unlock the converter with the O/D switch on the side of the gearshift ?

Does the lock up kit mean it's safe to tow in o/d? What exactly does it do?

It allows you to lock the torque converter manually in second and third (also first if you have the upgraded valve body). Overdrive locks itself as per normal. Was always safe to tow in any gear including overdrive, so doesn't change that.
