after the wheelin over Thanksgiving, I was driving home and my cruise control wouldnt set. The "cruise" light would come on, but nothing happened. So I thought it had to do with blowing ATF everywhere from my cracked hose and it had got onto something it wasnt suppose to. I read for a long time about troubleshooting my cruise control here on 'mud, and finallly I see a post that says" did you know if your brake fluid is too low it effects your cruise control?" So I stop at Checker, put some in,(it was low), and lo and behold my cruise control works. Imagine that!!

Was your brake light on?

Was your brake light on?

I drove for nearly a month with the light on in my Tacoma thinking that the sensor/switch on my emergency brake handle was bad or stuck. Finally someone told me to check the brake fluid. The level wasn't down much, but adding fluid did the trick. I finally found the info in the owner's manual, but it was not written in the section dealing with dashboard lights and indicators. So I'll second "Who Knew"!!

nope, my brake light was never on. my fluid in my reservoir was right at the low mark though.

The only way that any system would know that the fluid was low, would be the float switch and it turns the light on. Try setting the e-brake, if the light doesn't come on, it is burned out. I use low fluid as an indicator for pad life, when the fluid is low, time to check pads.

Viewing the EWD, don't see that the level switch has any connection to the cruise control, likely a coincidence, unrelated events.

I just went out and tried the emergency brake, the "brake" on the dash comes on as soon as I lift it up. All i know is that it worked by topping off the fluid. I might have go out and suck some fluid out of the reservoir till it is low, go drive it and try to set the cruise. If the cruise doesnt work, then i'll know its tied in somewhere.

Cruise control only works if you have gas.:rolleyes:;p

:lol::rolleyes:

Funny!! I have had the same thing happen..never said anything because I thought I was crazy. Cruise didn't work was bummed... changed brakes topped off fluid and now the cruise works.....I thought I must have a short that I jiggled when working on stuff.

Now if I could only figure out where the short is in my Lightforce lights I would be a happy man...well at least happier

Try setting the cruise, then pull the e-brake up a couple of clicks, so the light comes on. If the cruise drops, they are interconnected. The EWD doesn't show it connecting, but may connect through one of the boxes, likely the ABS box, both run through it?

I didnt check the brake pads yet, i'll do it soon.
