I'm having my car repaired for an oil leak. The shop "fixed" it about a week ago and it still leaked, I took it back and they're trying to get it right. I'm worried that they may just dump some seal sweller of something like that in it. I want to have the oil changed after I pick it up and have it analized. Will they be able to tell me if a product like this was used? I live in MI in the Detroit area, any idea where I might be able to get the oil checked out? Does this seem like something a garage would do, the seal sweller that is, or do you think I'm just being paranoid? One more add on. Are these oil treatments that are supposed to stop leaks bad for an engine?

Depends on what was used, a lot of seal swellers are oils that would be hard to pick up on analysis. Might show as a viscosity or flash point change if the additive is different enough from the oil, but that would not be conclusive.

Is the seal visible? Is there any other way you can verify its replacement? How about a visit wile it is being worked?

If you do not trust this shop you may want to shop around for one you can or think about doing more of your own maintenance.
