Strange whirring noise from behind the dash, comes on all the time, with or without the radio on, with or without the truck running -- sounds like its around the radio head unit area.

Searched some old threads dating back to 2003. C-Dan mentioned in one of those threads that the radio has a small cooling fan thats on all the time.
Landpimp provided a link to a parts pic that no longer works, and none of the threads had a conclusion!

Some days the noise is louder than others, some days it isnt there at all??:meh:

Soooo, any idea what this whirring sound could be?

Here is a video -- need to turn your computer volume up loud to here it (my phone sucks!)
Kind of hard to hear over the diesel :grinpimp:

Whirring all the time... With key out? or in ACC position or ON position or ???

If it makes it without the engine running, why not record the audio with it not running - then we may hear something other than the engine...

Why not pop off the fascia of the radio area to hear if it is really coming from back there - it's only takes a few screws to pop it off.

cheers,
george.

there is a nice sized computer fan located behind the radio and is mounted on that big metal support bar that goes across the entire dash.

Thanks for the replies guys.
I took a better video of it this morning with the engine off, no stereo on, no fans running

Would you say then the general consensus is that fan? If so how hard is it to get to? Remove just the stereo or the entire dash?

Sounds like the fan to me.
The fan it's easy after you remove the radio. The fan sits above the radio and to the right a little. Once you have the radio out you can just unplug the fan. It's about 3" x 3" square and 1 1/2" thick.
You could replace it as well with a computer fan as well.

It would be helpful for diagnosis if we had this info

If not noisy when key in OFF, then probably the cooling fan.

No noise with the key off. You can hear the noise stop when I turn the ignition key to off.
That last video was taken with no AC on, no fans blowing, and no stereo on.

That is just with the key turned to the first notch

So no noise when there is no power to the truck and the key is removed.

Hope that clears things up

Thanks for that advise, sure appreciate it!

Should I avoid turning the radio on until I get the fan replaced?

No-prob, I'm happy to share what little I know to help others when I can. We all help each other out here on mud.

Since its on all the time I think you'll be fine with tunes on. The bearings are most likely toast in the fan motor. If you smell something burning you may need to address it faster. LOL

you should be fine, that noise really is no problem, its a brushless fan so i dont think it will seize up. mine makes a similar noise.

Ok I'm going to try and tear into it this week.
Does anyone have a part number for this fan?

I figure it's worked good for the last 18 years, may as well get another one!

86267-60020 i am not sure if it is still available from dealers, even if it is available it will one little expensive computer fan...

Thanks for that I'll look into it.
If not available or way to many $$$'s what kind of computer fan are you using?

Ukaviator - any luck replacing your fan? I've got the same issue - this is the best thread on this issue I've seen yet

Mine sounds like Chewbacca from Star Wars going off periodically. Is that how yours sounds?

I really noticed it when I wheel the ac is on and it's hot outside more than when it's cold. I thought it was more related with the heater area (chewwey would roar, yet sound like a bubble in the heating core releasing pressure). But I'll look into disconnecting the fan since I don't have the stock unit anymore.

Any updates?

Hi. I am Stefano from Italy. Yesterday i removed the dashboard of my hdj80. I see the fan, similar the PC fan. Is stock from Toyota. For stopping noise the best and cheap solution is change-it with pc fan. See the pictures of my dashboard. Bye

My 2014 new tonme is making the same noise.
Certified Toyota Warranty should cover this right?

How hard to get to in a 200 series?
