Hi Folks,

I searched and found some threads for weird noises, but none seemed to match my symptom. My 2010 LX makes a loud, kind of rythmic whirring noise that seems to be coming from the driver's side of the dash. Seems to be loudest left of the steering wheel. It makes the noise when the ignition is "on" whether the engine is running or not. The noise is independent of the stereo or HVAC controls (noise happens still when both are completely off).

I took a video, but it's hard to hear on youtube--turn your volume up. The noise is NOT quiet, the audio just didn't translate well from my phone to the youtubes.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

Maybe the motor setup that auto adjusts the angle and extension of the steering wheel, but something (gear, limit switch, etc.) is broken so it never adjusts the steering column and keeps on spinning?

That is clearly a cooling fan with worn bushings, so the axle shaft is wobbling around while running. I’ve seen a number of posts about a similar sound coming from the CD changer unit, but none of an issue on the left side of the steering wheel.

I can’t think of a reason for a cooling fan on that side.. you may need to do some digging. Try removing the panel on the end of the dash when you open the drivers door and see if anything is visible in there..

My 2011 LX recently developed the same noise under the dash. It’s like a pumping sound. The engine does not have to be on and agree it does not have to do with HVAC being on or off. It is also intermittent. Did you diagnose the problem heckraiser?
It does not seem to involve the stealing column which still functions normally.

The sound in your video is exactly the sound I heard which my wife thought could be from the dash but eventually which I figured out was actually from under the seat.

Wow, thanks! I'll check it out. I had basically just accepted this noise would be with me forever :o
