20001 LC

There is a high pitch whine, similar to a turbo whine from the front end of the car. It gets louder and softer with engine RPM's.

1. If I shift the transmission into neutral or Park, the noise does not go away...its still there. Does this mean that it has nothing to do with the tranny and more with the engine? With the car in neutral, are tranny parts still moving? Fluid was changed about 20K ago.

2. Noise is more noticeable inside the car - outside, you cannot hear it.

I had the TB done 10K miles ago, and replaced everything that was a moving part in the front end. This morning I also flushed the PS fluid, but not much difference.

Any help would be appreciated......thanks

It might help to have a complete list of parts replaces with the TB service. That way others can tell if things like the alternator, AC compressor, ps pump, and fan clutch (all of which are moving parts in the front end) were replaced. The whine sounds like maybe a bearing and sometimes a bad one can isolated (very carefully) with a stethoscope.

One difference from my original post - when you are outside the car, it is clearly heard and increases with engine RPM's.

When the TB service was done, here is what was replaced:

Water Pump
Serpentine belt
Timing Belt
Idler Sub Assemply (2)
Tensioner Assembly
Thermostat
Oil Seals

Thinking Alternator bearing, PS Pump or AC compressor?

Your thoughts?

Thanks

There are 2 tensioners, one for the t-belt and one for the serp belt. I assume the tensioner replaced was the t-belt. When I replaced my serp belt tensioner the old one was a bit rough and noisy. Was that replaced on your truck? If not, maybe start there since it's easy and inexpensive to do?

Turn on all of your lights and heater blower (without AC) and see if it changes (gets louder). If it does it's the alternator.

The part that was replaced was 13540-50030 which shows as the Timing Tensioner assembly. Thanks for the input I will check the serpentine belt tensioner as well.

Crazy question but do you have an aftermarket radio or amplifier?

I'll bet its the serpentine belt tensioner

It sounds like the noise you are hearing is constant. Have you checked the power steering fluid. You will get a whirring squealing type of sound if the fluid is very low.

I noticed a whine in my mom's lx today, kind of sounds like a ground loop radio whine, but I'm fairly positive it's not the radio as it's OEM. It changes pitch with vehicle speed, I'll have to check and see if it's engine or another system related. It's had a timing belt, but fairly certain that was it.
