ok fj 4o owner here ...i'm looking to buy a 60....not knowing to much about them, what is a good year to buy?taking in concideration changes through the years?Disc brakes, motors?etc etc....

cool ,looked at the members rides seen a few i really like

Look into the FAQ section. It gave me alot of info to better my decision when I switched from a 40.

I would avoid anything pre-1983. I'd suggest model year 86 or later, with 87-88 being preferable due to some final mechanical fine tuning in these last years. But don't buy a POS 87 over a pristine 84 just to get the certain year.

actually this is going to be a present for my wife ....i still love my40 thanks for thinfo i'll look at that

Not sure what year they came out with the headlight washer things, but you're definitely gonna want those.

I don't have them on my 81. :D

The front headlight washers came on 84' and up models.

Not on my '84.

You sure about that? My 84' as well and any other 84' i have seen have had those.

My 84 has the HL washer.

If it's for the wife, buy a lower mileage 62. It's cruiser cool  and female friendly :princess:..fuel in jection and auto is the way to go for most. No woman, or at least none I've known, relish trying to start a bitchy, cold blooded manual choke 60

Depending on how much you want to mod it. I wouldn't recommend anything older than a late 85. For SOA or H55F definately, they changed to a longer tcase in late 85.

As stated above, Buy pristine over any year model, I've seen no need for a 5spd but that is just my situation, not a DD. I was looking for a 85 up and found my 84 and jumped all over it. It is a manufactored in :"DEC. 83", 1984 year model, it has the headlight washers.

for photos of a box stock, except for bilstiens and BFG 33X9.5mt, 1984 fj60

(yeah, i like these photos; if you've seen em before no new photos up, yet).

No, the above is incorrect in all respects. The transfer cases were all the same physical size. The transmission got an extension housing in 10/84 to make it the same length as the 5 speed tranny offered in other countries.

As to which year of FJ60 to buy, they are very similar throughout the model run. Buy the one with the LEAST RUST and the best overall condition. Remember too, that the interior pieces are nearly impossible to get, so a nice interior counts for something as well.

Converting any of the years to an H55f is pretty much the same with 2 exceptions: converting a pre-85 truck means you need to resize the driveshafts ($150), and a new t-case shifter ($50 used). Otherwise the swap is the same. I certainly would not buy a crappy 87 over a pristine 84 because of concerns about a later swap.

Midway through the 86 model year, the idler shaft in the transfercase went from 34mm to 38mm in diameter. Maybe that is what Darkrealms is confusing with t-case size.

edit-My 84 has headlight washers too. I'm going to take out the pump and tank to add a second battery tray.

FJ60 has the classic 2 round headlights and a manual transmission with roll up windows and no overdrive, carb'd 2F with manual choke
FJ62 has 4 square headlights, auto trans with OD, power windows, EFI "6"

I like my FJ60 because it has the classic looks. An LS1/TH700R4 are next on the list for EFI and more power/gas mileage.

Here is my truck: $3K purchase, $2K OME 2.5" lift/33's, $3500 paint job

I think if you want a 60, as everyone else has said, the condition weighs heavier than the year. In addition to whay CDrew said about the TCase having a slightly thicker idler shaft, I believe there is also a slight gear ratio difference for 4L (1.99 pre 5/86 compared to 2.28 post 5/86). I don't think these types of differences matter much for the average, mostly on road, driver.
I would try to find her a nice 62 with AT and EFI and possibly PW and PL. The ATs are really expensive to replace so its importand to find one thats go low miles or has benn maintained well, or both.
