I just installed a snorkle on my Hj60. Just wondering about the direction that the intake should face. The thought is about water ingesation, like when you drive into a heavy rainstorm. is there someting in this to worry about? Maybe I should be posting this on the diesel forum?
Well, with the intake facing forward you get a kind of cold air ram effect, which should be good. With the intake reversed you'd get negative pressure at the intake which probably isn't good.
I rotate mine to face the rear in dusty conditions ( eg. convoys ) .
In rain and other : forward .
The reason I rotate it back is cause I have a K&N filter . If I know I will encounter a lot of dust ( before leaving home ) I put in a paper filter and leave the snorkel facing forward .
IF you look closely at the intake you will notice that there are channels in the top part of the snorkel. THe tube to connect to the intake is run up inside of that and a lot of the rain is forced againts the wall of the intake and runs back outside of the unit. The opening is also slanted which helps keep out the water. I have driven mine for 4 years now in heavy rains and have never found any kind of moisture in my airbox. It is not a problem, I do find a few bugs and you would be suprised how little dust. When we run dirt road in a group and compare airfilters mine is almost clean when people in the group without snorkles are full of dust.
