Not having much luck finding a replacement rad for my 77. ENS was a bust - they only have rads for MTM trucks. Was hoping not to re-core but maybe I have no choice? I'm running a re-core in my 73 without problems but I don't tow with it. Any thoughts from those who have been down this road? What would Wayne or John do??

If I do re-core, any suggestion to increase the cooling capacity? Seems Wayne posted up once that the rad could be enlarged. Does that require new tanks/ new custom rad and if so, where to locate?

Thanks!!

Peter

Check with Mike from West Coast Cruisers, he has/had a '91 HZJ-77 ATM and he may be able to give you some options or may have spares on hand.

sorry to hear Peter,

I would have no problem running recored rads in my trucks.
I would say if your going to have to go down that route get it recored to a 4 core rad. You should be fine.

Thanks for all the replies. Looks like its a re-core. No luck finding new Can/USA. Price for new from Japan too much for my budget.

How about using the manual radiator and fitting an aftermarket transmission cooler?

That's a possibility but then all said I'd be in for at least the price of a new rad from Japan - probably more.

I might actually go the Japan route after all. Tough call. Save $400-500 today with the recore but will it last another 22years? I'm not so sure...

After going through a bunch of BS / delays associated with re-coring my Hj61 rad, if you could get a new one I'd def go for it. I know it's expensive but a cooling system is pretty important! and I'm gonna say no: a re-core will def not last as long as new as the tanks are not replaced, just patched if needed (I think)...
good luck! Get shipping insurance!

recore is fine if done properly.
4 core recommended.
do NOT do the MTM rad with aux cooler, you need the heat from the factory rad to warm up the tranny fluid in the winter, they are designed to run at a certain temp.
but
that being said
i WOULD put an aux tranny cooler in before the factory rad when reinstalling, those auto trannies are VERY expensive to rebuild.
the shop can use the factory top and bottom tanks.
cheers

you can also try Dave at Japan 4X4 to see what new would cost with shipping.

Spoke to Dave. $815 for new toyota rad. Waiting on shipping quote.

Wayne: to be clear, your suggesting I locate a new rad from Japan and have a separate transmission cooler installed ahead of the stock rad, custom built using the old top and bottom tanks? Does the rad shop need special instruction on how to build this additional tranny cooler? Do the tanks need to in turn be modified of does the tranny cooler end up the same width as stock? I'm having trouble picturing the new cooler but then again I might have misunderstood and I'm not all that quick on the uptake.

Thanks to everyone for your help and insight.

Peter

the auto tranny lines run through the bottom tank of the rad, the actual 4 core rad would be easy enough for them to do.
the additional is completely seperate and has a line running to it from the auto and from it to the rad. the shop should be able to do this for you.

ask away.
