I am getting ready to make the next step in my family wheeler build up. I am seeking opinions on what sounds best for my FJ62. Here are my drivetrain choices:

An Extreme A440F from Rodney mated to the stock 3FE.

An H55 mated to the stock 3FE.

A Vortec mated to a 700R4 (or some other GM auto tranny).

Which option sounds the best?

Thanks in advance.

Andrew

5.7 Vortec/4L60E (beefed up if you're going to rebuild); stock GM computer. Reliable, "cheap", maintainable by the corner mechanic.

Be aware that engines produced around 1998 had chronic intake manifold leaks in the water jacket at the back of the manifold. FelPro makes awesome replacement gaskets.

No diesel option?

An H55 mated to a vortec

Couple of questions for those above:

Why the 5.7 instead of the newer 5.3?

Why the vortec mated to the H55 instead of the NV4500?

Consider the "An H55 mated to the stock 3FE" option.

Low pain, low cost - It's a bolt up with some extra Toyota parts.

Reuses what you have.

Provides adequate power and mileage (better than the auto tranny)

It's all Toyota.

Spend the money you save on getting the truck in superior shape and adding some goodies or a trailer.

Yeah, I guess the NV4500 might be a better option bolted to a Vertec, unless the closer ratio shifting of the H55 is desired.

If you want to keep the 3FE get rid of the A440F and install a H55F, if you want to convert to stick. If you want to go 350 use the NV5400, or I tihnk the 4L80E is a good option. My 0.02 cents.
