Hey All,

My birfs started to clunk a bit while in low range,so I want to change them, but cannot find trusted info whether they are long or short.I could buy flanges as well but do not want to spend 100$ more just for that.

Car is 93 model year, actually built 12/92.It has ABS and locked diffs, also I think it has bigger rotors, rear axle is on rotors not drums.

some say it should have longer birfs but what I see in el. catalogs it sows both options, so i t would be nice if anyone can tell me which ones does the car have , before actually dismantling the axles.

Thanks

Short IIRC. Long started in 95.

sorry for blatantly re-asking,but how much sure are you? :)

and one more thing is it possible I buy non abs birfs and then put on my old birfs abs rings on them?

I would say about 85% sure.

You can get long birfs and long flanges as an upgrade.

The question is, which axles do you have on the vehicle? Are you the original owner, or could someone else have swapped or modded them before you bought it?

Measure a flange; then you will know. Search, some posted the measurements. Thicker are for the longer birf, of course.

The short birfs ran up to 4/94, this information has been discussed on mud before.

Measuring your flanges will give you a clue if they have been changed to longer version or not.

Thanx guys, that is why I love this forum!

I am 3rd owner, as far as I know :) Although I a pretty sure birfs have never been changed as I have fuul info on maintenance from the first owner and previous one did not change it as well, so it seems it is my delight to be the first one to open it up.

Pic is helpful and I think I can manage to check visually is it longer flange or shorter.

Thanks

As said, unless they have been changed they will be short. Easy to tell at a glance, the early flanges are much flatter looking. The early setup wears the birf and flange splines, best just to upgrade all of it.

and can I buy birfs without abs and put my rings on them, is that possible?
Yes. Just tap the tone rings off with a hammer and brass or aluminum drift. When I installed them on my new birfs, I used a rubber mallet to tap tap tap and get them started, then finished them with hammer and drift, tapping on alternating sides. It took about 5 minutes to do my first one ever.
