Hello,
I have a 98 LC and I'm having this weird issue and I can't find where it's from.
while driving when I lift my foot off the gas I get this clang noise coming from under the floor then when I put my foot back on (not in a smooth way) I get that same clang.
went a did a regear with arb lockers front and rear still had the same issue. A mechanic friend of mine who is a mechanic that fixes american cars said it's the transfer case so I went and bought a transfer case took it to another mechanic who specializes in Japanese cars he said it's not from the transfer case but from play in the front diff. So I went back to the shop who did the diff they said it's not from the front diff but from the front CVs which made no sense to me.
now I'm stuck not knowing where the problem lies. anyone faced a similar issue?
any help is appreciated

Nadim

First place I would have looked is at propeller shaft & spider joints. I say that because you say from under the floor. Then drive shaft, then wheel and axle bearings & bushings. You have been lubing (propeller shafts/spiders) & packing (wheel & axle)haven't you.

The drive shaft has been recently replaced and the u joint aren't ceased, the CVs have some play in them but nothing grave. From underneath the car if I put it in neutral I can turn the front drive shaft a 1/4 turn before I find any resistance while the rear driveshaft can't be turned. I still think it's the transfer case plus some additional play in the CVs

As 2001LC said, hit all the grease fittings on the driveshaft before you start replacing parts. The following link my help.

The OFFICIAL clunk/thunk driveshaft thread
The clunk is from the front not the rear, at one point I had the front driveshaft out so the car was only rwd and the clunk was gone, then Installed a new front driveshaft that's greased and the clunk was back.
I'm Now thinking about how I could turn the front driveshaft without the rear one turning, that's play in the t case no?

It is common for the splines to ware out on the cv and drive flange and this will cause a similar clunk to what you had described. Pull the dust cover off the drive flange and jack up the drivers side tire, rotate the the tire back and forth and see if there is play in the splines. If so replacement of the cv and flange will be needed.

That would be two in two days.

But I'm betting OP checked, as he has been through it all from the sound of his post. As I recall there was a transfer case issue, in some 00-01's. Vibration and chatter wasn't it?

That would make sense because I saw play in the CV, I could turn the CV without the wheel moving, so now I have to check the drive flange for wear

Definitely check that. There should be no rotational movement on the wheel side of the CV.

You need to check everything, bushes, uj's, cv's, diff mounts, etc. if you have got movement between the cv and flange make sure you renew the cap after repair or at least put some sealant on it. I have just found movement in my cv and there was signs that water had crept in making a mess of the grease in and around the flange, not sure if this was the cause but it doesn't help.

Where's a good source for buying CVs and flanges? And what type of grease did you use?

I got genuine Toyota due to problems with aftermarket cv's people have mentioned on here, It's an expensive repair, well it is in the UK where toyota's parts policy is extortion, I managed to source one cheaper but will have to go to the dealers for the other. The grease is lithium based wheel bearing grease, I bought some from amazon, I got the info on it from this site somewhere.
