Where'd that come from?!! Lift gate power lock/latch advise needed.

1986 FJ60, no power options...

My rear lift gate latch works. Push the button, the thing pops open (just installed new lift supports, nice). But, it's stuck in the unlocked position and I can't lock it. I have a feeling I just don't have the key. Here's the more odd thing. While fixing the washer line yesterday, I found an electric/power lock actuator, but it's not linked to anything and the wires were snipped.

My thoughts so far: this door came off a different vehicle that had power options. The current lock itself was swapped into it because my vehicle wasn't setup for power.

I'd like to make use of that actuator. Did actuators work with the manual locks in some way, perhaps with linkage and additional part? Or would I have to have a totally different lock/latch setup? If so, where can I find one?

Does anyone have a photo or diagram of the rear lift gate power lock/latch to help me figure out what I have and don't have?

Does the actuator work by sending voltage in reversed polarity, one direction to lock and the other direction to unlock? I could wire a switch for that.

I may just buy a new lock with key... but that would be too easy. :)

Sounds like you have an FJ62 hatch on your 60. Those came with power locks. I don't know how they work but there is bound to be lots of info on here if you search hard enough :)

A 62 door, that would account for not finding much info when I search for "fj60 lift gate power lock" or similar terms. I need to be searching for the 62. That little bit of info probably helped me out.

Hopefully someone else will chime in with the exact knowledge or photo or diagram.

Thanks for the welcome! This site has already assisted me big time.

I'd wire that up to a weather proof push button and hide it in my bumper for those unfortunate times when the keys get locked inside

If I get it working, I just might do that. Fun idea, thanks.

Anybody have diagram or photo of the rear lift gate power lock/latch?
I found a diagram that was suppose to cover 60's and 62's, but no power option was displayed.
Just trying to figure out what is missing so I can make my power lock work.

I think you nailed it on the head, the wiring schematic shows a relay on either side of the rear door lock solenoid.

Should be able to make it move with a 12V supply. Just use the same type of momentary switch that a winch uses, momentary on, off, momentary on.

I was thinking of using one of those toggle switches that returns to center after you push it up or down. I think people often use those for running glow plugs in old diesels so the plugs don't burn out. Toggle springs back to OFF positions.

Still need the lock (and key hopefully) for power lock type and the linkage.

I actually use one for my diesel. But you can only hold it on for so long or you will burn out the glow plugs.

But what you probably need is the one I described, it is springloaded to center, which is off, but turns on in both directions if you hold it. Holding it in one direction unlock, the other would lock it. Releasing it goes back to off. The switches I use are made by Cole Hersey and the description will read just like I said, momentary on, off, momentary on for the toggle you need.

We're on the same page. I was actually talking about the toggle that does comes back to center or off automatically. Cole Hersee has a lot of options, thanks. Just looked them up. If they have a similar switch that isn't a toggle but more like a rocking button, I think I'd go with that just to make things match up.
