I have only a single key, with transponder for my new to me LX. I'm not real thrilled about the $130 option from the dealership. Where are you guys getting your keys from? I also found a part number for a non-transponder blank 89786-50030 which would be fine with me if it works in my rig. Other than the keyless I don't think I have a need for the transponder version, but I don't know.

I purchased mine from Ebay:

Replacement for 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 Toyota Land Cruiser Remote Car Key Fob 39294278642 | eBay

Took it to a local locksmith for him to copy my existing key to the blank, then specified that I would program it myself. Followed these instructions to program the chip then the keyless entry:
Transponder Key Programming

FYI if your door actuators are too weak for the remote programming you can manually use your hands to lock/unlock the driver side door. Just make sure you follow the "lock/unlock" sequence every second or so like instructed...it took me a few tries.

I took a chance a bought a couple ebay keys. Local locksmith was able to cut for like $5 each. Not all guys can cut the key due to shape. I went through the crazy brake and gas pedal dance to program.

The part number for the non transponder key is correct. Those keys will work because they have a chip inside, but will need to be programed (crazy brake and gas pedal dance). If you buy the key with the integrated remote, you can't just buy one with an empty shell. You have to get one that comes with the remote/transponder inside because that is what deactivates the immobilizer.

Ebay is definitely a good option. Finding a locksmith to cut it may cost a bit more than for a Land Cruiser, as the LX key is laser cut.

Fyi the Lexus dealership near me wouldn’t cut my blank unless I purchased the key directly from them. That was like $400. I called a few locksmiths to just cut the key with no programming and one wanted $130 for it. I finally found one that cut the key for $25. Works perfectly so far. I have a 2004 lx470 so the transponder is different from 2002 and below models and the sequence for programming is different as well.

Yup. For anything after 2002 programming is fairly easy. If you have a master key the easiest way is with Techstream. No master things become kinda difficult.

The transponder isnt the buttons, but a chip that if the ecu doesnt recognize it wont let the engine start.

When you do get keys cut do not insert them into the ignition switch first. Run the key in and out of the door lock and turn it a bunch of times.

. Same here, keys were cheap and programming easy.. I wanted a key I could use to hide on the frame as well as a extra for home.

Ok, I may just buy a couple of the 89786-50030, have them cut, and program myself. I do have Techstream, so maybe that will make things easier.

If the key you already have is a master then you are set. Techstream will make things easy.

Programming a key is just plain easy. It's easy without Techstream and it's easy for all years.
