I have a JDM BJ73 and the rear brake light has gone out.

Is the replacement an easy 5 minute fix or something long and complicated?

Is there any shops that would sell the bulb in the lower mainland in BC? or any online stores?

I'm going to be pretty busy hauling chinese lion dance equipment here and there so it'd be great if it's like a quick stop and a 5 minute job to replace so I don't need to take it into the shops.

Thanks

Any Toyota dealer in town can get them should be the same as the CDN BJ70's chances are they are the same bulb used in the BJ40.

I ordered some from my local dealer...

and after driving an hour discovered they ordered the wrong ones, even after I specifically told the parts guy they were 24 volt, etc etc...

No apology, no nothing, just "oh well , the new ones will be in tomorrow"...and I drive an hour home....

They can sit on the shelf, when they get there. I bought them from 4Wheel, the PITA is waiting, plus shipping , and pricey, but at least it's what I need...

I'd love to pop in at Lordco, but it would take me a week to get there....

Re: John Galt's link to the topic that states that 4WheelAuto.com has the light kit. They are in Edmonton, Alberta. Now the tale... you will want to rush right over (or phone). Toyota never got me the brake/tail lights I ordered. NEVER. Benson Auto gave me the wrong bulb 3 times, so I gave up. I told them to phone me when they get the right one in. That was months ago.

Mike Pynenburg, Toyota "Master" mechanic (independent, conscientious, thinks about what he is doing, comes up with answers) near Ottawa, Ontario, while he had my JDM (1987 HJ61 Turbo, I-6), he tried bulb after bulb from multiple vendors, and the most common issue is that the pins are reversed (lower pin, higher pin). This went on for WEEKS before I bought the bulbs from 4Wheel.

1-866-468-2570, Dan is on vacation, but the bulb kit is basic, and is usually (seems to me) in the featured items on the Web site. 4wheelauto.com

Thanks for help guys!

Now is the replacement really easy to do? I think I just see 2 or 3 screws in the back for the cover, and all I do is pull that off and do a switch?? Or is there some interior panels and whatnot I should replace first?

I think I'll go for the kit, so I can replace anything else in case it pops.

It's a half a banana job.

Remove the screws from the light cover, slide cover off, remove bulb (push then turn, I think), install new bulb, re-install cover, screw it back in place, go get yourself a beer and celebrate.

Lantec, I have no regrets over buying the kit (but then I have 3 HJ60-61 to nurture). The postage and/or aggravation of rushing around for a bulb after it blows... you get the picture. The dashboard bulbs from Toyota are 3 watts. Their kit has compatible 5-watt bulbs (much brighter, say 60+% brighter, ha ha).

I removed the lens (again on the Model 60) with a screwdriver. There was a seal to keep in its place, and 2 metal (aluminum?) plates in the lens housing (horizontal). One went below the top section, fitted into middle section; seems to me the bottom one also fit into the middle section. It was basic, straightforward (just observe what is what and where when you pull it apart) and I have to guess not the same on your truck.

My bulbs (stop/tail) are push and turn, one pin higher than the other to prevent misalignment during install.

Compared to Yankee vehicles that require a body shop and a mechanic to change a bulb... it was thoroughly satisfying.

Ya, but Lantec is in Coquitlam so EBI or Lordco can't be more than 15-20 minutes from him.

On the flip side, the cheapest I can get my glow plugs here are $45 CAN each plus shipping. I can get the same bloody NGK plugs from RockAuto in the US for $7.67 US each plus shipping or a 30 minute drive across the border. I'll be buying two sets from them. So Zekester, you might want to find a good source for bulbs and buy a couple complete set, so you have them on hand when you need them.

I always travel with a complete set of replacement bulbs and filters anyways. I amy not have any problem finding parts here near the city but in the interior its a whole different ball game.

I do carry a spare set...my last trip out the ice crushed a few of my lenses and popped the bulbs, so my spare set was reduced to in service...

I'm down to one side marker light missing, waiting for 3 bulbs from 4 wheel auto...
