Where/How did you install your winch control box?

I purchased a titan 12k lb winch back a few months ago with the group buy. My winch is mounted in the bumper, but i haven't wired it up yet. Today, i started looking at the connections and i realized that the wires coming from the control box are made to a length so that it is to be mounted relatively close to the winch itself. I would like to place it in the engine compartment and this will require me to make a few changes. Here are my questions:

1. Where did you install your control box?

2. At the end of the wires coming from the control box, what did you use to splice in additional length of wire if you wanted to place it further away from the winch?

I have the BIOR bumper and same Titan 12K winch....I did not want to mount in engine bay. So here is what I did....pictures in build thread.

1. Make template of four bolt holes on top edge of box with control portion on side...as I was going to hang it from its top facing towards winch on left side of winch mount facing truck.

2. One at a time I would drill a hole...then check template before drilling next hole....did this and checked every time for four holes...did not want to be off on one.

3. Used included bolts....put through bumper top plate and tightened control box so it is hanging from top plate facing winch.

4. I then put some loctite on bolts and replaced one at a time...then capped with rubber nipples to keep moisture and mud out of the hex holes.

Keeps out of weather...keeps mud and debris off of it....keeps out of sight....no need to lift hood to get access. Works great. Had same exact winch in my FJC...had it nearly submerged and controller never missed a beat. It is pretty weather proof with the seals and construction anyhow...more-so than a Warn I had in past that seemed to need a new solenoid every year.

Still going to put a kill switch between winch and battery but trying to wait until I put in 2nd battery now that AHC is removed.

The wires are actually pretty long on mine....so could have mounted up close in engine bay but you can buy any winch cables to length for Warn or others and they will work or have some made up custom....if you dont like what I decided to do on mine. Good luck.

Engine compartment on the driver's side fender on a simple bracket...high & dry and convenient to access if necessary...with incab controller switch too.

My control box was faded from the sun so I pulled the stickers off the pox and painted it grey to match the bumper then made a mount for it to fit flat on top of the bumper. I did have to buy longer cables because the ones that came with it were long enough to mount it to the top of the winch. I would not try and splice those cables, you can pick up longer ones at any auto parts store. When I replace this winch I would like to move the box under the hood and utilize a wireless setup.

I remember we shared some PMs about this. With my dual battery kit and the solenoid for that attached to my air box (between the battery and the box), i have no room to mount the winch solenoid for my Titan. I have tried a few things. The spot between the PS headlight and the airbox is a little too small and also where i want to mount my ARB compressor.

I relocated my Rigid light bar to the upper light mounts hanging down. This now allows me to mount the controller box where it is supposed to go on the center of the bumper.

Just relocated mine last week. Had plans of putting the entire box in front of the air filter, but it was too tight as said previously, so I ended up taking it out of the box and mounting it on the fender in front of my dual battery controller just to get it mounted. Not sure if I'm going to stick with this or where to mount the socket. I don't care for all of the exposed positive terminals, but there were already several in this area for the dual battery.

I also put it on my main 150 amp breaker. Anybody know if the winch draws more than that under load?

Thoughts, Ideas?

I placed mine and YetiinGA's Titan control boxes between the passenger side headlight and the air filter. I then ran an extension for the connectors to the remote and mounted the plug on the blank on the right hand side of the entertainment/climate control bezel.

In the box or open like mine?

As Pfran said fits nice installed in front of air box.

Hey paul, where did you get the extension for the winch control connector?

I made it using 16 gauge wire. I think it was (5) 20' runs bundled with zip ties every couple of inches and routed through the firewall. Seal up where the bundle exits the solenoid box, seal, the firewall hole, use a Dremel to dig out the back of the blank on the center dash bezel and mount. Works like a charm!

Almost all 12v and 24v electric winches will draw well north of 150 amps at full load.
