i have an 85 22rec that is going through oil like crazzy. about a quart every 100 miles. no leaks at all not one drip or oily spot on this engine or any of the drive train. its not in the coolant. this thing only smokes a little bit when you first start it or if you let it iddle a little while and stomp on the gas. what the hell??????

Had same problem with my 80 20r and my 81 22r.good compression,no leaks into the coolant, never did really figure it out.Even took head off and put new valve seals on it,didnt help any(all though that could be the problem with yours.)I suspected bad oil control rings. Do a compression check, and a leakdown test if you can.If it smokes a litle blue at start up and when you let off the gas after heavy acceleration than it is your valve seals.Had an old chrysler 318 that was using a quart every 100 miles and replaced valve seals and didn't burn a drop.(Big problem with old motors that used umbrella seal for valves, toyota does use a positive type valve seal though that lasts much longer)

I had the same problem until it snowed, then I figured out quick where it was goin...right out the tail pipe.

take out the plugs. see if they are all oil fouled or just one. this will help you determine what cylinder(s) is consuming.

addtionally, when it sits overnight, the valve stem seals leak oil down the valves and ultimatly into the combustion chamber. causing the smoke at initial startup.

Back in 85 I was working at the local Toyota dealer and we had LOTS of this same complaint. On the 85's the new piston design did have a few issues( flexing= resolved in 86) and the main problems were bore taper and out of round and rings lining up causing lots of oil consumption. Ihave personally done over 250 of these jobs about 3/4 under warrenty. Check your compression and do a cylinder leak down test . This may help with the diag.

I have the same problem, except that I can go around 200 miles without have to add a quart...

How do you do a leakdown test?

just face it, you have a 22r thats WORE OUT

add oil or rebuild it. It probably is making the guy behind you on the trial sick anyways. (cough cough)

if a 22r is not new or rebuilt it will smoke or knock or both.

Ive killed many many 22r/res:cheers:

How much does a rebuild cost or where can I get one already rebuilt?

Here's my dumb question for the week:
Don't think so, but, is there such thing as the exhaust smelling like burnt oil without the smoke?

TIA,
ML

It may be so wore out it doesnt have enough compression left to actually burn the oil (making smoke) and just puke caustic fumes that make a person sick.
