Where do you let your dog ride? (80 series or other wagon)

So I'm new to dogs, and as of Christmas, we have a great new addition to our family. I'll have to say, I never much cared for them and never got the whole "Cruiser-dog" threads that seemed to go on forever on the LCML. But now I understand. She is great in the car, and we went for our first 4-wheeling trip today with the dog. She did fantastic! Even saw a pack (is that the right word?) of Javelina.

Where do you all let your dogs ride? Tied in/tethered?

I have an 80 series, and I took the third row seats out, and have a rubber liner in the very back with a blanket on it, and the windows cracked. But she likes to put her feet up over the middle seat between the kids. And when we were on the steep/rough stuff, she was sitting on the middle seat between the kids with them holding on to her. I get a little nervous that she'll try to come up front at a very inopportune time when she's sitting there, so what do you all suggest? I love the sliding windows in the back and so does she...

It really depends on how the dog is trained. If it's still a pup it will be easy to train it not to come up front unless you want her to.

he bounces between the passenger seat and rear bench. as soon as i exit, he's in the driver's seat. invest in good washable seat covers.

She's 2 years old, or there-abouts. And I have cloth seats in the 80, but seat covers sound like a good idea anyway.

i've got cloth also, but dogs get into mud and such...when it drys, you just pull the seat covers and shake them off. wash if needed.

My 2 labs ride in the back, whether it's the '40, '60, 4Runner, mini truck, or Dodge. They don't care what we take, as long as they get to go! They're 7 YO, and don't hop into the front anymore, even w/o the pet seperater (sp?) up.

In the 60, we trained ours to ride on the floor behind the passenger seat.
when we are on smooth roads (rare around here) she gets up onto the rear bench sometimes.

Within 5 seconds of me and my wife getting out of the car, the dog is up front in whichever seat is closer to wherever we are, but she prefers the driver's seat.

Tried to get her to ride in the far back, but opening the tailgate was too much a PITA for us... and if she was going to climb over the seat and get it sandy/muddy, might as well just stay on the floor.

Of course, recently she has decided to jump in on the floor, then climb on the seat to get to the OTHER side of the floor.... I think she is just doing to make sure she spreads as much dirt around as possible, claiming her territory, so to speak.

In a 60, the easiest solution to keep seats clean and pooch in place is to put the bench seat up, but leave the seatback in place. Creates a low barrier that can at least help the dog realize where the end of *her* space is and the beginning of *my* space. And keep dirt/mud on the floor.

Mine ride in the back seat only. They both shed huge amounts and create a real mess with fur flying everywhere. I have a "pet hammock" that connects to the front and rear headrests and provides a sling that helps keep it somewhat clean.

My Puli used to sit in the pax seat, and climb onto me when she wanted even more attention. She would sit in the back sometimes as well, but usually it was one of the front seats. When bother were occupied with people, the back seat would do. She had hair, not fur, so shedding was not a problem. Lord, I miss that dog. She would jump in any door - including the back gate and hop out any window or the rear tailgate - even with the lower gate up. Unreal. Used to leap into and out of my car window like it was nothing.

GF's choc lab sits in the cargo area - we usually have the rear seats folded down in the 80 and 60 so he's got a lot of room. We throw down blankets/old comforters to make it more comfy and to control the hair from the lab. We take it out and wash it every now and then.

we keep the back folded down with a moving blanket in the back for the dogs. One hangs out in the back and barks at the pass rear window until it goes down, the other stands on the center console, front paws on the console, rear in the back.

generally in the rear seat then on the driver seat when I leave and If he is pissed about being left he stands on the steering wheel causing the horn to go off till I get back to the truck!

All my dogs have been to big to ride comfortably in a bucket seat so they always ride in the back seat or in the truck bed (I have a shell). On longer trips they like the truck bed best since they can have food and water and move around a bit if they want. None of them like the FJ40 much. Not much room by the time you get an ice chest and some other gear back there.
