Do y'all know of any 'different' places to go wheeling & camping? Been to Gilmer many times but looking for something a bit more rustic in north/central Texas. Is there any public lands that allow this? I have access(where I hunt) to 21K acres in the hill country but there's not really any wheeling, just dirt roads or terrain that's way to rough. Thanks!

K2 in Mason, Texas. Club event is in a few weeks out there. Well worth the trip. One of the favorite places i've gone wheeling, and usually a great group to hang out with.

Other parks:
- Hidden Falls in Marble Falls, Tx
- Clayton, OK
- Bridgeport OHV in Bridgeport, Tx

Been to Clayton, that's for buggies. Been to Hot Springs, a bit too far. Been to Katemcy, its ok. I heard Bridgeport is kinda lame. I'll check out Marble Falls. Thanks.

Hidden Falls is no better than Gilmer in my opinion.
The only public lands are going to be National Parks. Everything is owned by someone here.
Clayton and K2 are where it's at!

been to Katemcy....But have BEEN to ROUND UP at Katemcy...now that's a whole nuther world!

Rocks might be the same, but the people and the bbq and the band and the raffle..you really have been to K2 until you have been to Round Up...c'mon out!

Might help bit more if you defined "wheeling & camping"..... I do both at Clayton.
What kinda rig do you have, setup, experience, ect would help folks point in right direction.

First places I thought of you have nixed....

From sound of it gsmtr.... It's in tn but sounds up your alley of wheeling.

Maybe there's 'lighter' places to wheel in Clayton than where we went. We were all buggies, covering about 1 mile in an entire day, over boulders the size of VW beetles. I'll check into the milder trails there. My truck is unlocked now but about to put an Aussie in the rear. I'd say I'm looking for level 2, mild 3 trails. But more I'm looking for uncrowded, more solitude camping w/wheeling thrown in the mix. To me Gilmer is not uncrowded, solitude type camping.

2ND That. We have had a great time going down there. If solitude is what you want you sure can get it there. No one for miles and miles. But with that said I would highly recommend a second rig to go due to the same reason. No gas, no help, no parts, no grocery store. Getting stranded down there is like being on a deserted island.

Yeah..... That's not going to happen in most parks. The beach or Big Bend are your best bet for "solitude".

That's about an 8hr. trip for me.

I've always had fun at Bridgeport, and its not too far. Worth checking out at least for you, not too far from Waxahachie.

I think I will.

Hot springs in October. (Southern Cruiser Crawl) would be your favorite park from the sound of it. Lots of TX guys make that trip. Come see us!

I like aggressive wheeling but I also like plenty of space to roam.

It is a brutally long and boring drive but Big Bend National Park offers a lot of acreage and decent wheeling. Keep in mind that it is a bit like Padre Island.....but worse. You are about as close to the middle of nowhere as you can get in the United States. Closest towns are El Paso or Odessa and they aren't that close.

Keep in mind that New Mexico really isn't that far if you are measuring by Big Bend standards. New Mexico has great wheeling.

Another good alternative which is much closer to DFW is the Talimena Trail and Talimena Scenic Drive in Oklahoma/Arkansas. There are MANY trails off th e Scenic Drive that make for miles of good wheeling. I was up there recently. It is decently steep and really nice country.

Man that sounds exactly what I'm looking for! How about a trip report from your outing?
