Hi everyone,
When the main heat (not the under seat heater) in your FJ-60 is working perfectly, how hot does the heated air actually get? Is there a huge difference between the fresh and recirc setting in terms of air temp? My question stems from the fact that I don't my heater is working well. The air from the under seat heater will almost burn your hands, and the main heat is luke warm. When you have the main heat set to recirc, it gets hotter, but not by a huge margin. So can I ever expect the main heat to get "burn your hands hot"? On the list of things to do is the heater core flush.

My fj 60 will keep me cozy when it is below zero. Clean your heater core. There is a good write up on mud I am sure.

When up to temp, I can JUST keep my hand to the flow coming of the the vents. Rear seems a bit hotter, but front is definitely hot too.

There is a valve on the firewall above the engine that opens or closes when you slide between hot and cold.

Maybe that valve could be bad. Not opening or closing. And the rear would have a separate valve. So maybe thats a possibility.

Looks like this:

The fresh air door gets crud stuck in it.Make sure your door down in the ac-heat system is closing all the way. Mike

I had been following the other heater thread. On my 290K 83 fj60, the rear heat is somewhat (not hot) warm.

I think I may have, some kind of blockage on the vent system. When I put it on recurlation, I have twice the air flow. From when I have it on, outside air.

I think my problems may be greater than I imagane. I have a bunch of black rubbery stuff on the inside of my radiator cap. I believe this may mean the seal on my water put may be going out.

Sorry hijak, my heat works good when the car is warm.

My heat is hardly warm at its best, this will be great with the ensuing 'snow storm' predicted in the next few days.

Is there another bypass besides the thermostat? My temp gauge barely comes past the beginning line on the gauge. new thermostat, new radiator, please give advice for i am freezing. I guess tomorrow i will put some cardboard in front of the radiator. I cant believe it is this hard to stay warm in alabama. Also my truck hardly ever gets past the same mark in the summertime so take that into consideration. Am i freezing my motor?

Do you know if the rubber ring for the thermostat is in place? That seems to be the problem for lots of folk.

I put the themostat in myself about a year ago and i am anal about making sure stuff gets done right so i would have to guess that its in there but i will check since i have an extra themostat in the back floorboard, and a next door neighbor who works at Toyota so parts are cheap and quick to arrive, how much more could you ask for!!

I was amazed to find I had any air flow once I saw all the stuff covering the intake for the blower motor. The fresh air intake is located behind the windshield wiper motor under the hood. I just used a shop vac and some contortion moves to get my hand in there to pull stuff out. That's a no-cost fix and can make a difference on air flow.

X2 on this advice. If the top gasket wasn' t there when you put in the new t-stat it would be very easy to miss it on the install.

Iirc when you purchase a new t-stat you have to ask for the top gasket (xtra $$) or you won' t get it.

If you are not certain you have it, I would take a few moments & check.

Any good links to a home brew heater core flush? I had mine done last year but I don't think they really did squat - I don't get much heat but I know the engine is hot because it heats my WVO. (after going through the heater core)

If you're getting air out of it, the intake is probably not blocked. It can get gunked up just like your radiator because it is just a little radiator. It's a PITA to remove, but a radiator shop can "boil it out" & it'll work like new.

Mine will fry your feet in sub-freezing temps.

Muriatic acid works to flush the core. Info on how to do it has been posted in the past.

I'll recommend white vinegar (Acetic Acid) instead Hydrochloric Acid ("Muriatic Acid"). Lots less hazardous though slower. I let it soak in mine for ~48 hours. Before full throttle garden hose in resulted in a trickle out. After got me pretty wet.

With either flush, then flush the other direction. then flush again. Then hose off everything under the hood on that side. Then do that again and perhaps it won't rust things too badly.

Having the same issue with my 88' 62. The heater in the console is very warm, but the air from my vents is luke at best. I considered changing my thermostat, as well as a heater core flush. I need to do something soon - it is only 12 deg F in Wichita at the moment. We aren't used to temps this low!

Radi flush idea

I know that on my old 84 Mercedes they recommended using citric acid to flush the cooling system. Since they used an AL block, muratic and other more energetic acids could damage stuff. The citric acid is also considerably less toxic to your hands to work with.

I get heat from the dash but it gets considerably warmer when I am moving... If I am idling the temp from the dash drops until I start moving again.

My floor heater (the burrito burner) is ultra hot and serves its purpose well (keeping fast food hot on the way back home).
