How far do you go?

Do you take all the chrome off around the side windows?

I got all of the Roof gutter chrome off, and I still need to take the peices off below the doors.

I haven't done this, and I don't know the specifics, but it seems like in another thread they said that you had to keep some of the window chrome because it held stuff in place. What people had done is sanded it down and painted it black, you would have to sand it pretty good, and maybe use a self etching primer for it to stick, but should work, let us know how it goes

"Snake Blinders" - I like it.

So sand and paint. sounds good. Im getting a Blacked out Grill and Light doors from a guy in Evergreen this weekend. I should be Chrome free by Sunday.

Sweet, I'm looking forward to seeing how it works out for you.

I recently de-chromed the roof (would've done it years ago if I knew how easy it was), and my payback was a splinter of chrome under my fingernail for weeks. OUCH.

What're you doing w/wheels? (I'm trying to live vicariously for now) ;)

I blacked out my e34 BMW chrome and felt that self etching primer is a must for long term adhesion.

My e34 held up for years until someone hit me. It is meant for shiny, polished surfaces and adheres extremely well. I couldn't scratch it off with decent force and that is usually my test other than long term.

Would the self etching primer be too hard on the grill? My black grill needs to be redone.

I think you can go to an auto glass shop and get the black parts to replace the chrome in the windows.

Have you removed the chrome strips around the front windows for the pass and drivers door? They are very easy to remove along with the chrome trim around the rear pass and rear drivers door.

I will tell you a secret on doing your grill cheaply.

Use your hand and sand off all of the loose chrome and scratch up the rest of the "good" chrome. Now get yourself some of the cheap primer spray paint from walmart. Now put on 4 to 5 very thin coats on the grill and bezels more if you desire. Now get which ever color you want to paint your grill....I chose flat black....the cheap stuff 96 cents a can. Spray very lightly 4 or 5 coats or more if you desire. I have had mine for a year and nothing has peeled off or anything. DO NOT TOUCH IT UNTIL IT FULLY DRIES......tacky paint when using this method will wipe right off. It has to dry completly.

Just another thing.......If you want to completly black your truck out but keep the stock type bumpers you can actually order front and rear bumper that are black. You can also get pre-blacked out grills and such from either SOR or MAF can't remember which

are they simple 'pull and discard' like roof trim? i've been tempted, but didn't wanna goof the windows up.

saw the charcol/black bumpers on $OR, that's kinda what started me thinking.

I want my truck to be the reverse of my doberman: tan & black for my black & tan... ;)

The trim around the windows is fairly easy to pull off, just grab them with some pliers and work it slowly, especially in the corners, or you'll scratch the paint. The window sill---a little harder. It is not needed to keep the weather strip in place, contrary to what I have read here, but you may need to order new weatherstrips as they get very brittle with age and if you remove them, the metal imbedded inside the rubber may crack and if that happens, they're pretty much toast. Those pieces are really only cosmetic; you can remove the chrome and weatherstrip, separate the two and replace just the weatherstrip with the tabs that go into the four or five recesses made to accept those tabs. The chrome within the windshield, rear window and cargo window weatherstrips is super easy to remove.

Also, don't try to smoke the resin/gunk that has accumulated behind all those chrome pieces (you'll be amazed how much)--it may look like what comes out of your bong when you clean it, but it ain't!!!

I HATE chrome on these vehicles, even on the 62s. Tacky.

I just tried this on my 62 and when I pulled the chrome on the drivers side and passenger side front windows, it really f***ed them up and left a gaping hole between the weather strip and the door. I'm not sure what others are referring to but if you take the chrome strip out the door would fill with water and other junk. plus the weather strip wouldn't stay in place.

Are HJs, 60s, and 62s all the same?
