Great ideas on extending wheel base...what is the easiest way to stretch it out...start in the front or back?

A few issues you need to be aware of in the front:
1) Steering box - typical Saginaw style rear facing pitman arm is gonna limit pulling the front axle forward unless you mount the box way forward.
Front facing pitman will allow for more stretchability.
Full hydro steering will negate any steering box issues.
2) Coils or leafs - obviously having leafs, you gotta fab up some kind of outward spring saddle to mount to the frame, which could act as a slider or rock grabber.
Coils, you don't have that problem.
3) Shock mounting - you'll need to trim the inner & front upper lip of the fenders.

Rear issues:
1) If using leafs, same problem arises when you mount the leafs.
2) Mounting shocks will require the upper mount to be moved back or another one fabbed up. Massive fender trimming will be required.

I was only able to pull my front a few inches forward, but my rear, I extended it to the maximum without my tires rubbing the back fender lip.

stock FJ40 = 90"

It really is amazing what another 1-2" changes when it comes to wheelbase....I've had 90, 91.5 (redrilled rear perch), 93.5 (reversed rear), 97 (reversed front and rear), 99 (reversed front and rear, redrilled front perch), 100 (redrilled front perch, reversed front, linked rear), and now 99.5 (rear axle change, smaller tube diameter, pushed it ahead .5")....

I have 98" with reversed front and rear springs (just checked). I am wondering why my number differs from Woody's, is it becuase I don't have a shackle reversal?

that's because my front mounts were custom and not related to anything stock...

Woody is a freak..

Well yeah but how does that affect wheelbase? :D

cause he probley cut the first 1.5" off the end of his tape measure useing the chop saw to cut steel.....

just a thought.....:flipoff2:

wheeled mine stock, then springs flipped at 98", currently 4-linked rear at 102" WB with the same 36" tires.. planning on 103 when the front is linked but it wheels real good now.. dosent have the turning radius though it had when stock

I've got a leaf sprung '40 which sits at 102 with 39.5x18 boggers. Works very very well.

I just barely notice the increased turning radius.

The coil sprung '40 has a 104 inch wheel base. it worked very well on the 42s. If I ever get back to work on it I expect that it will work well on the 53s. But I'd like to have longer with this large a tire.
