I recently purchased a 2001 cruiser in January and really like it. I am a maintenance freak and want to make sure I do everything that is required to make sure the next several hundred thousand miles are trouble free. It now has 101,000 miles (I bought it on Jan. 9th, 04 with 87,000 miles on it) and last week I had the timing belt, water pump, seal etc replaced. The service manual reccommends the front wheel bearings be packed every 30,000 miles. I reviewed my Toyota service manual before deciding to have the timing belt changed by a professional. However, it does not appear that the front wheel bearings are real difficult to repack. Can someone who has perfromed this task please advise/confirm my assumption. Also, is there somewhere I can get the required parts/special tools on the internet and save some $$$.

Finally, any details/shortcuts on repacking the front bearings is greatly appreciated.

Thanks :D

If you are doing the bearings, you might as well do the brake front pads since they are on the way ( it usually works the other way around ) PM Cdan for the parts he can set you up. For the bearings, you just need a few gaskets and clips that cost just a few bucks. If you are not doing the brakes it's probably better to buy them at your local stealer

Aren't you guys lucky, service interval for front wheel bearings in OZ is 20,000kms or 12000 miles!!! Costs a fortune to have them done to keep up the warranty! 30000 miles is more realistic, has anybody got an 03 or 04 100 series to check the service level in that year??, If it is different than Australia I will have a go at Toyota as it is ridiculous!

Both the GX470 and the 100 series are independent front suspensions (same setup), why does the owners manual on the Lexus GX470 (NEVER) call for a wheel bearing repack????
