The manual recommends lithium base wheel bearing grease, NLGI #2 for wheel bearings, Molybdenum disulfide lithium base chassis grease, NLGI #2 for the steering knuckles and steering linkage.
I was reading a tube of Valvoline Durablend Moly grease, and it says it is suitable for disk brake wheel bearings.
Is there any reason the moly grease shouldn't be used for the wheel bearings?

You want Lithium grease for the wheel bearings for its high temp properties - and moly in the birfields (and hence trunion bearings). The lithium would be fine for the trunions - but they share the cavity with the rest of the knuckle...so you don't want to mix. Moly isn't a good idea for the wheel bearings because it can cause them to slide in the race instead of roll....

I just saw a similar question posted on the cruizers.com board, and the response seemed to support using the moly grease in the wheel bearings.
So, anyone else have experience or opinions on using the Durablend moly grease in both knuckles and wheel bearings?

i guess i'm of the mindset that you put what the manual recommends in and don't hope that one will work for both. The moly should be the thick black lead saturated nasty stuff that sticks to everything, not the grease w/moly that alot of people sell. if you look at the spec on the back of the can most of the w/moly don't meet the requirements set by toyota. as for wheel bearing grease, that stuff is easy to find, some high temp lithium wheel bearing grease, you won't need that much, a little 1lb tub will do just fine....

Alright. I have and read and read and read......about moly grease. Maybe I am an idiot, but I am having a hard time procuring some.

Could somebody PLEASE list some complete brand names, so I can start looking on the web for a location that sells this stuff. I am in Dallas-Fort Worth area, and don't know what to buy or where to buy it. The previous post says:

So far all I have seen is:

Valvoline ValPlexM
AMSOil Synthetic Heavy Duty Grease (Moly-Fortified)

Do either of these meet the requirements of the FSM? If not, what brand does, and where do I buy this stuff.

Thanks a bunch guys...

I run the Valvoline synthetic in every vehicle I own. Wheel bearings, birfs, trunions on the Cruiser (my brother ran it for years before the Cruiser became mine.) I use it in my Xterra front disk wheel bearings. Truck has 148K miles on it and no issues. It's good grease, but man is it sticky and stains anything it gets on...

Is that the red stuff?

Coolerman:
Please excuse my ignorance, but Valvoline synthetic what? What does the outside of the tube say?

dargreg:
bulk or cardlock bulk station? Not familiar with that term. Are you talking about a gas station that has a garage?

Hate to pesster you guys, but want to make sure I get this right.

Thanks,
Chris

Not red but brown/black stuff. Let me look for a pic of the birf packing process...

Ok here is a pic of the grease color. also see this thread it mentios the grease part number. It does contain moly....

Hmmmm I used the red stuff on everything when I did my disc brake conversion. Was that bad? I can't remember the name of the stuff. I got it from Napa and it said on the can that it was good for drum and disc brakes. Internet search seems to indicate that this is fine. Plus I barely drive my truck as it is seeing as how I'm like 12K miles away.
