I am usually on the 60 forum but have a question.

A BJ71 for sale with the 13bt- has approx 105k miles, open diffs, OME lift, no rust- US titled....

I already have a 60 and am new to the 70 world. Oh it is RHD- from Japan I believe. Owned by a cruiserhead who takes care of his flock. Any issues to look for? What do they go for in the US?

a pic would sure help us help you :)

wish I had one- body is straight- year is 87- just looking for a ballpark assuming good condition.

Thanks

I would think 13-15 Grand. Wayne (Crushers would know best)
Get it compression tested. That would be the main concern for the engine.
Take a magnet to it to see if its been repaired with bondo.
Inspect the frame for holes.

The value is going to be driven by you for a large extent. For example, I have two 1986 BJ71s. They are Canadian spec trucks so I was able to import them into the US without any reservations. A JDM spec truck is not eligible for importation into the US to be legally titled for road use. Therefore, the truck you are looking at carries some risk due to its importation and titling; i.e., it could be seized by authorities. What is it worth to you when considering the risk?

FYI A few years back there was an amazing diesel Defender D90 that was for sale in the Atlanta market and some friends were looking at it. My friends did not buy it, but one of their friends did. A few months later, it was damaged in an accident and the insurance adjuster was digging through the title which lead to questions being forwarded to the DOT & EPA on how it was imported/titled. The vehicle was impounded (siezed) and crushed at the owner's expense. A complete write-off to the owner.

Consequently, it is my recommendation that you will need to make the primary assessment of its value to you.

It is not my intent to be overly negative, because the truck sounds like a great find and a real keeper. Good luck

Excellent info Larry. I really appreciate that- It does bring some serious questions to mind.

One more question- if you were going to have a restored 60 series and an 87 bj71 sharing daily drive duties, do you see any issues? MY concern being that after checking with Cdan- replacement parts will be a problem.

I drive my BJ70 daily. Cdan has had problems getting parts, but Dave Stedman at Japan4x4 has been able to readily get what Dan could not. The only down side to Dave is getting him the funds (he only quotes in yen).

The only reservation I have is protection from other drivers. Six years ago, I imported a 1985 BJ70 from Canada and left it stock as a daily driver (no trail intentions for the truck). It was t-boned by a guy running a red light and my oldest daughter was driving. The insurance company totaled the truck due to a bent rocker panel and creased outer door panel. It was just insanity and meanness by the insurance company. My lesson was that the replacement BJ70 that I bought got bumpers and sliders as soon as I could build them to protect it from other drivers. I am glad I did it because two Chevys (a HHR & a Yukon) have impaled themselves on the bumpers with only a scratch on my bumper as evidence of their poor driving.
