I opened up my rear differential to install an Aussie Locker. It's the first time I've been inside mine.

Inside are what look like an extra two plate separated by four springs. What is this thing? Some kind of limited slip? And all time, I just thought I was a decent driver...

Yep, google image search confirms: limited slip.

Now I need to figure out how to remove it.

Swap it with the front and put the Aussie in the rear.

It's the angle. The c-clips are there. I'd already removed the pin and block.

My next question is whether my carrier is the stock unit. I don't know anything about limited slip (or much about differentials, if I'm honest), but my understanding is that an auburn or something similar comes with the carrier as well. Also, the carrier pin bolt I removed wasn't metric.

I'll take a closer look in the light tomorrow, but if the carrier isn't stock, will I need to replace it was a stock one in order to run the Aussie?

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Will the carrier need to go with it?

Yup, just pull the whole third and swap it to the front.

Thanks, Bob.

Looks like I'll be replacing those knuckle seals. There's no way to remove the front third without digging into the knuckles, is there?

You don't have to take the knuckles apart but you will have to pull the axles out a few inches to free them from the side gears so you can pull the third. It's like pulling a birf but you only pull it out a few inched.

Nice find!

Chris

So, what can anyone tell me about the grooves in the carrier and whether that's acceptable wear?

You cheater! The truth finally comes out... no wonder you always past me on hill climbs... ;p

Cool find.

Does this mean you are keeping the 40 and not getting the 55?

I do not see any groves to be worried about. The ones inn the carrier are from the casting.

Yeah, I couldn't get the 40 sold in time. And by "in time" I mean the MONTHS that the seller of the 55 patiently waited on me. So, after much :bang:, I realized that my destiny lies along a shorter wheelbase path.

Flip the front and move the rear with 60 springs and strectch that sucker:steer:

So, I'd like to use this thread to continue asking what are probably stupid questions as I move through this.

I finally got the rear axles out, which was made a little tougher by the LSD spring pack. Is there any reason to be concerned with some surface rust on one side of my long side axle shaft?

It looks like maybe at some point it sat for a long while with some water in the axle housing and the upper half of the shaft wasn't getting any of the gear oil.

Light surface rust is common; not to worry.
