What's better? Gates green stripe OR Toyota hose?

The best hoses are the ones you change out at least once a decade. I don't think Toyota branded hoses are magically superior to Gates.

That said, all my heater hoses are 25 year old factory ones so I can't knock Toyota too much.

I had 20 year old Toyota ones and replaced them with OEM. Didn't look at Gates since it was easy enough just to order the parts from Beno. I have heard Gates makes good hoses. I used gates for the PHH.

Gates (green) is a mighty good hose. I imagine both are comparable in quality. I have found in some situations...the Gates hose to be slightly thicker than OEM (depending on the hose).

You can't go wrong with either.

Gates made the timing belt that I used in my STi, and worked in some "demanding" conditions. I would trust it, but nothing is a substitute for inspection and time-based replacement as I mentioned above.

Gates make excellent parts, I wouldn't hesitate to run them. If I had a choice though, I would go OEM.

The green stripe clashes with the colors of my 80s so I use OEM whenever possible.

If it isn't possible I use NAPA Gold (relabeled Gates Green stripe) so it doesn't clash.

Even with my green 80 I felt like it looked out of place, but since I used it for the PHH I don't usually see it.:D

No that was me got an entire set of Free HPS hoses so... I ran with them

Most of the 80s out there had 20+ year old Toyota hoses before they were changed out. I figure if they last 20 years that's a good run. The Toyota ones come bent and marked making installation even easier. Why mess with anything else? It's just not worth the couple bucks you save to get the right bends and the factory fit in my opinion.

yup HPS hoses are al pre bent and come with stout hose clamps, I replaced with constant torques. If I paid I would replace all hoses with OEM and carry OEM as backups.

If you're talking about the HPS silicone hoses keep an eye on them. There are documented cases of the silicone hoses weeping and failing even with Breeze constant tension clamps.

Gates Green stripe is superior hose. It's much more resistant to oil than Toyota hose. If you don't believe me go look at the hose on 2Fs that runs under the oil filter. They are usually swollen, ugly and in bad shape. Green stripe in that same application is still perfect after 14 years.

The only problem is, it's hard to find curved sections that work.

But if possible, always use the Green Stripe hose and you'll likely never have to replace again.
