OK Jeanne just got through dumping about 4.5 inches on VA. This morning I got to drive the rig to work :bounce: . On the way took it through about 4 feet of water, almost over the hood. Thank god for that snorkel, been itching to try it out. However had not extended the diff. breathers on the truck as of yet so I know I will need to change the fluid. Brakes seemed fine after 150 yards of water, had my foot on the pedal giving light resistance all the way through. Is there anything else I should worry about checking? Water crossings are fun! :D :D
 
Looks like you are getting all sorts of weather lately, rain, tornado, winds....from what i've learned on here, flush the oils in the diffs, tranny, transfer case..
 
I find it a bit skeptical that a truck built with the quality the 80 is, a truck that has been all around the world in all types of terrain, and somone in the US goes through deep water and he is being told to flush all the fluids in the drivetrain? I would hope this is not the case! Just because the water went over the diff breather shouldn't mean that the breather didn't close. I would check this time, but hopefully you will find that no water has entered these areas.

Sure flush diffs and such if you're so inclined, but I would hardly say you need to. These vehilces are tough, I know of tons of friends in high school that ran vehicles into water until they died tons of times, never one did any work on them, drove them for 100K miles after that without ever changing any fluids, nothing was ever hurt, probably not the best for it, but certainly not a problem.

Water is fun, muddy water is better. :D

You do that so they don't get wet and you've still got stopping power when you come out the other side. At least thats what my Dad always told me. Oh and by the way Rookie any man worth his salt can drink more than 32 beers in 1 day. :bounce: :beer: :bounce:
 
The brake thing got a little distorted along the way. You don't press on the brake while in the water, but after you get out. A bit of heat is generated by lightly pressing on the brakes for a bit after you're out and driving off.

If the fluids haven't been changed recently, I'd change them out or at least let some out into a clear container so I could check for contamination. 48" of water is actually a lot of water for 150 yards and a bit of contamination is likely. Toyota recommends things be checked, and that the F/R driveshafts be lubed after water immersion.

Jeeez, you got all that crap on your truck and you haven't spent $20 and an hour to extend your front/rear diffs, xfer & tranny breathers? That's what I'd do if you're considering crawling under your truck. Extend everything up into your engine bay and if you're feeling really motivated plumb it all into your snorkel or air filter assembly depending on how anal you are - some folks are known to be picky about what air their drive train breathes. And if you're going to cross water that deep with any regularity I'd consider adding extended breathers to your distributor and your starter. I think someone like Photoman had some nice pics posted of that under a post about rebuilding your starter.

Still, I agree with others that you could do that trick a dozen times and drive it 100K miles without checking those fluids and it'd still get you where you're going. But in your case I would worry about cooling down your turbo too fast with a cold water bath - I guess something could crack???

How come you can drive the thing through 4 feet of water and you can't even wash your engine w/o flooding the dizzy?

I need to find that post on the dizzy breather extension. Not that I need it in the desert, but, I'd like to wash my engine at least ince in the next 50K or so miles. :D

Hey what you calling crap? :flipoff2: And yes I have been planning on extending the breathers on all those things but lately been working 6 days a week and havn't had the time. Will do probably this weekend. Been slacking. :doh:

When ever i washed my engine, water got down below the spark plug cap. Never had problems with the dizzy. I'm too scared to wash it now.
 
Be sure to grease your muffler bearings.

Actually, I have grease on my muffler.....from the d'shaft!
