Not really, becasue you are not directly connected to the crankshaft you will get multiplication.

Go fo a noraml stall on the TC. High stalls tend to overheat on the trail.

Just to throw this in the pot, here's my SM465 to single Toy T case set up by Marlin with Toybox adapters and 4.7:1 low gear. It measures in at around 32" overall. Im running retubed toyota pickup drive shafts and 4.37 Mini Truck axles with flipped springs SOA on 35's. Using a double cardan in the back.

That's what I'd like to run. But I was thinking of SM420 instead of 465. Got any pics from your build?

Unfortunately, adapters are out of stock for 2-3 months. There is someone on the forum selling a SM465 adapter. Does anyone know if that will fit the SM420? Is the only difference the lock ring on the SM420 output shaft? Also, I've read some posts about potential front driveshaft clearance issues with the bulge on the side of the SM420 case. Is that something I should worry about? It's seems to be a non-issue w/ so many people on this forum running SM420s and a passenger side drop front axle.

Adapters for the sm420 and sm465 are different. Not sure how, but I'm sure they do not interchange.

Good stuff. The person I talked to at Marlin told me they were the same. I kind if figured they were different because they are listed as different part numbers.

Currently, I am running a 2F - SM420 - 4Spd T-case(1.99:1) - 4.88's and 35" tires.
Total crawl ratio is 68:1 Seems to work well.

I have been considering a 3:1 Orion - 102:1 and a stock split case(2.23:1): 76:1
I think the Orion would put me in the 'sweet spot'.
Any input?

SM465's are easier to find parts for should something kersplode. If you're interested, I have a spare 465 that I'd be willing to part with.

crawl math

Seems like a good thread to try to finally figure this out, can somebody break these numbers down for me so i can try to understand how this works. for example : h42 -crawl box4.7 splitcase-4.88 r/p and 35 tires. Thanks

trans first gear ratio x the tranfer case gearing x the ring and pinion gearing = crawl ratio

And for those with auto tranny's you can multiply that formula by "2" due to the torque converter. 2 is an average of the multiplication you get.

My 40 has a 700r4, np203, and the stock 3 speed case. With my 4.88s, I'm at 148:1. Why did I got with auto tranny? Control-ability.
