I am pretty happy with the stereo in my 2004, but it's always good to know what will work in case something becomes available

For example, the SCION Stereos work with no modification in an 80 series because they have the same connector interface, slight modification for the LX450. I was able to install a much better Pioneer Stereo with a 6 CD MP3 internal changer and ipod interface for $50 in my 80.

So "plug and play" typically comes down to the connector interfaces. With that in mind, I am wondering what other Stereos that also control the Climate will plug into the 2003 and up (mine is a 2004)

My stereo has the BT and rear camera that the 2003 did not have

Many of the plug ins (VAIS) offer solution for 2003-2007

I have read where the 2007 new came with an option for Satellite Radio

Does a 2007 stereo plug into a 2004 and what other features are available?

What about the 200 series stereo or other Toyota models?

I know Rob is doing some research on building a modification harness to use other setups. That is awesome info. My question is what will work in the existing hole with minimal to no modification. By minimal, I mean use of existing connectors with possible wire additions for new features

Subscribed! I thought the Highlander and the Prius had the same model #, but I'd love to know for sure. Just in case......

Me too in case there is something fairly simple out there

The process is under way for converting out of OEM. Will be updating the website soon.

Just read the update from your site, Rob. Looking forward to it!

Is it true that the Highlander and/or Prius use the same NAV as the LC?

Judging from the link to an older thread bamachem found and posted up today (https://forum.ih8mud.com/100-series-cruisers/112695-navigation-generations-interchangeability.html) I believe the answer is yes which got me to thinking about the manual climate controls. The GX470 came with the nav/non-nav option and there are substantial numbers of those without nav (compared to LX/LC) and I was wondering if their manual climate controls might be a plug and play type of option using this:

2007 LEXUS GX470 A/C HEAT CLIMATE CONTROL UNIT OEM | eBay

Maybe not, but maybe so (with some facia work) but wondering if possible. I know that in the Lexus GS world people do the nav to non-nav and the climate controls are plug and play with regard to the wiring harness.

Thats a good thought as well. I know from my 80, Toyota likes to make a single harness and then plug in whatever options that unit gets leaving connectors and partial, harnesses hanging free. Not sure thats applicable here

Not any real info yet, but another question

There are cruisers without factory nav that pop up once in a while

Knowing Toyota likes to make a single harness, wondering if you can buy the non-nav setup individually and it uses the same harness and connectors or there are other connectors allready there as part of the harness

I am not unhappy with the NAV setup and dont plan on changing it anytime soon, but understanding options should I choose to do something later is a good thing

The below is a picture on a 2006 without nav, but factory components

An easy way to tell is to compare the connector type and pinnout for both setups.

Ken: Onur, Dan & I researched this very idea some time ago (thanks also to Phil for sending me the nav EWD). They were able to determine the actual wiring harnesses are different. The nav version does not contain the non-nav connectors/receptacles. That, of course, is a shame and more or less a deal killer for most.

My original thought, like your's, was maybe Toyota just used a "master" style harness and converting nav to non-nav would be pretty much plug and play. But not so per Onur and Dan's research to same.

IIRC the complete under the dash wiring harness that would be needed was around $1200. And I think the remaining pieces, not counting the OEM stereo head, was around $800-$1000, including fascia trim pieces, brackets, etc.

Not cheap but I heard a new Nav system is $5000. SO still maybe an option depending n how much a head unit would cost. Sounds like a hell of a lot of work though.
An '06 truck still has a tape player???

My friends 07 still has one. lol!

I will say this on the topic: A single model of Toyota could have upwards of 10 different radios. Many of them look identical but have different model number and are even made by different manufacturers. Toyota does like to make connectors and other stuff like that have broad usage so they can have fewer part numbers but (especially on the newer stuff) there are so many different options like climate control/nav/XM/bluetooth/CD changer/iPod/USB/AUX/etc a straight plug and play is unlikely. That being said, a little creativity can move mountains. You could virtually put ANY radio in ANY vehicle if it physically fits in the radio bin. You would just have to re-wire or re-pin the connectors. I am going to install a SCION xB radio (one that was damaged, touch screen glass was broken and touch screen no longer works) in my 1980 Pickup.

Wondering is anyone has looked at the 2013 200 series radio connections. It also has HVAC controls. Not sure if an adapter cable, rewire connectors or just too many differences to make it work

Excellent idea wider how the width works out. Also check out robreds link
