Hello diesel gurus, It has been a while since I visited this part of the forum. I have had my 12HT for a while it was rebuild about 50K miles ago. Our rig is 1984 HJ 47. Since our travel is on covid pause i want to use this time to up grade the 12HT to the new stuff. My 12HT has the Gturbo, 3.5” down pipe, intercooler over the engine (homemade), added an electric fan to the radiator with a manual switch, oil can etc. I have not done anything to the injectors or the IP pump except an electric fuel pump to help when needed with fuel starvation. We travel in remote areas so i don’t want to make too much sacrifice with reliability.

Our rig is currently with Adventure Truck Slovenia Adventuretruck.si | Kamnik | izdelava avtodomov - https://www.adventuretruck.si/ for a camper remodeling.
Here is our build thread on IH8MUD Builds - building a landcruiser for overland expedition - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/building-a-landcruiser-for-overland-expedition.236987/page-39#post-13980251

Thx, appreciate your input.

Is the mechanical fan still in place? If not, I'd absolutely be replacing that. Additionally the lift pump is more than capable of supplying a 12HT with ample fuel, if your electric lift pump is actually required, you likely have a lift pump fault that you need to resolve.

Some form of Engine Watchdog to monitor engine temperature and provide an audible alarm would be a great addition, and if you're radiator is looking ratty and older, I'd go ahead and recore that. If you dont have a decent fuel filter/water trap installed then I'd also be looking into that.

The mechanical radiator is still in place, i manually turn the electric fan when needed i.e, in traffic or running the AC. I have had fuel starvation issues before and replaced the lift pump, the electric pump is for additional support when needed, it has a switch that i can turns on manualy.

I think i am good on the engine watchdog gauges engine temp 2x, oil pressure 2x, egt pre turbo, boost gauge. Yes i plan to re core my radiator or install a aluminum radiator. I am trying to decide between a re core or aluminum radiator. I know the down side of aluminum radiator is repairability when in remote locations. Wonder what you think about re core or aluminum?

Having been forced to repair radiators in the Australian outback I would absolutely be using a brass/copper unit. They are easily soldered (with practice) and seem much more able to withstand tough conditions for years on end.

Gday mate,
In my opinion then next step would be the bigger injectors and modified injector pump.
I went the +30 injectors (30% larger??) and modified pump (I think with 11mm plungers) from ADS Injection in Australia. I believe they also do +50 injectors.
There has also JH Hilux (I believe) in Australia who modifies pumps.

I have seen a dyno graph of a 12ht with just the bigger injectors (standard pump) and it had good gains, but for me I decided to get the whole lot done together…

I have message ADS on their FB, they suggested rebuilding my IP I ask if they do performance up grade when they rebuild i have not gotten a respond. My other problem is that my rig is in Slovenia, I would have to send my IP pump to them, not sure if they are interested in dealing with all the hassle. I will wait and see if i get a respond. There is also the option of just changing my injectors. I will also google JH Hilux. Thx

Do you have a 12ht engine. Can you share the link of a 12ht with a ADS set up. Thx

So sorry Mate i just realized you do have a 12th engine. do you think the reliability of your engine remained the same?thx

I think so.
It has been built stronger than when new, and I have just returned from a 16000km trip into some pretty remote areas - with the reliability of my engine never being questioned in my mind…

Did you find out what was causing the fuel starvation? The fuel pumps on these often last longer than the engine. Unless you see a specific problem with it, I would leave it alone. Injectors can be checked to see if they need a rebuild. I fthe cracking pressure and spray pattern is good, I would leave them alone also.
The 12HT is possibly Toyotas most reliable turbo diesel.

Again , unless you see a problem I would leave it. And if they do rebuild it, I would want an assurance they are experienced in this pump, because talking to local shops here in Australia, they don't see too many of them because of their reliability.
