What lubricant goes in steering box (1 Viewer)

I have a very hard to turn FJ55, and was wondering why this could be happening.

I have greased all the ports of the steering parts, but it is still hard. And the only part that was not lubricated was the steering box. It has a plug on top, but have no idea of what to pour into it.

Any points on what can be making the steering on this pig so hard? I have a couple of 40's but they are soft compared to this one.

Pour 90 wt into your stock Pig steering box...also check those U-joints on the input shaft, they have been known to freeze up.

It is a stock steering box.
What is exactly what you call u joints? Here we speak Spanish and the terms mix up a little.

Hi All:

Peter, as "Pighead" said, 90 weight gearbox oil is the correct fluid for the TLC manual steering gearbox. That said, if the 90 weight oil leaks out really fast one can use regular grease in the steering box.

The *J55 model of Land Cruiser has a short "propshaft" between the steering gearbox and the steering shaft (which the sterring wheel turns.) This "propshaft" has a flexible joint at either end; these joints (so-called "u-joints") require greasing to maintain proper operation.

These "u-joints" on the steering propshaft may not be obvious; there might be a rubber cover over them.

I will put the 90wt and check on those U joints tomorrow and see what happens.
Didn't think those U joints can be the cause, but it is very probable, since I notticed some play on them and a knock sound sometimes. I had centered my efforts on grease only.

Will post on what happened.
