What is this.

'98 series cruiser, 1FZ-FE: port-side block, at about #5 cylinder, is this sender marked with my great black arrow. What is this? And how do I get it out without damaging it?

Knock sensor. Large wrench on outer diameter and turn ccw like any normal bolt or nut. Be careful not to break gray plastic connector extension, which appears to have already happened on the other knock sensor.

Alot of people break those when doing the PHH. I broke mine, and was able to get the wiring harness connector off eBay and a new knock sensor from the dealer (pricey). Some people have luck with the cheap knock sensors and some dont. That part is sort of a pain to access, so I went with OEM.
