What is this leak?

What is leaking on top of my valve cover and what is the thing and hose circled? Either urgent?

PCV valve. What year is your truck? My 2000 has a grommet that gets brittle and fragile.
 
Positive crankcase ventilation.
 
Its only a couple bucks, just replace it!
 
The PCV should be replaced every 50,000 miles or so, it's cheap, it's required, replace it.
When it gets clogged, it will cause pressure to build up inside your crankscase and cause engine seals to leak.
 
I got nothing to do at this time, so I started typing.
With the movements of pistons (and any seepage of air into the crank case) the volume of air inside the engine goes up. So the excess air is forced into the combustion chamber through this valve. Make sure to get the PCV valve and the grommet form the dealer. I applied a tiny film of black silicone onto the grommet (both outside and inside) so it holds the PCV valve 25K miles without any leaks like what you see.

Back in the day these gases, which are actually exhaust, unburnt fuel, water, petroleum vapor from motor oil breaking down as well as other stuff, was vented to the atmosphere. Huge pollution problem right there. So in the name of cleaner air, the PCV was created, it is a one way valve, it lets the harmful gases out but does not let clean air back through.
It is then fed to the intake to be burned in the combustion chamber and then ran through the catylitic converters with the engines exhaust.

Back in the day, gas caps were also vented to the atmosphere. Now they are sealed and the gasoline vapor is collected, condensed and returned to the gas tank. This is why you get a check engine light if your gas cap is not on tight or when it goes bad.
 
Just replaced the PCV valve. I feel sorry for the homies that have had lots of trouble getting this thing out, mine popped out with a flat screwdriver... Maybe why there is plenty of caked on oil around the hole? What's the best way to clean the valve cover without getting debris in it?

Degreaser and water. Just make sure the PCV is in place.
