Hey Y'all,

I have a project in mind and was wondering what is the most common Toyota diesel engine in Canada?

I need an engine that can get a 60 series to highway speeds decently but still can find parts for and is considered bullet proof by you toyota lovers

The actually car is a Chevy haha, sorry :(

Thanks peeps!
Have a great new year!

Cheers,
Kevin H.

Probably a better idea to swap a Cummins in it. Toyota stuff that can accomplish those goals is $$$$.

If your chev can take a chev 6 cyl, then a 1HZ would fit. Most diesels that are powerful enough are not going to fit easily height wise, particularly in newer cars with front ends that slope down.
And it depends on what you think decent highway speeds are. Changing your way of thinking is the easiest way. If you can get over the fact it will take you 10-20 seconds longer to get to highway speeds a couple of times a day, its easy. If you cant handle losing 40 seconds in a day, you are doomed.

Aren't the v6 lot shorter than the 1HZ?

With the 1HZ you will achieve this.

Chev/GM does have a 4.2L I6, but it's far from the most common configuration. The V6's would be a lot more compact than any I6.

Need more information on the car to provide a better engine suggestion..... Is it a car or truck for example? Year? Model?

Thanks IanB - that might be the best route...right now I have ruled out the Mercedes OM617 - unless I find a custom building guy to figure out how to get the sump out of the way of the cross member

Hey rosocoFJ73, sounds like a good engine, I just can't think of where to easily find parts for it...
And maybe I should have stated, I'm on a budget lol Thanks for the input
Oh and yes, I can give away 40 seconds lol.
I don't need wild acceleration, just to get up to a bit higher than highway speeds (100km/h)

Great, thanks MauricioR!

Thanks again IanB, I'll look into it

I would say, but I'm afraid of being chastised for giving up on my land cruiser/hilux/tacoma dreams :(
Okay, I'll say it, but please people, don't laugh at me hahah :)
I'm looking to another one of my dream cars... a 1969 El Camino. I know I shouldn't even post that model name on these forums, but I wanna swap in a diesel for fuel economy, durability and uniqueness factor at car shows.
I've talked to people on el camino forums and kijiji people posting their custom car/hot rod building services.
Everyone says the Mercedes OM617 diesel engine will be a problem because of the sump is forward? And it gets in the way of the cross member. One dude from kijiji said he could do it but the cross member needs to be "massaged." I really don't understand what that meant lol Anyways, I was thinking now how about a toyota diesel engine...I even contemplated putting in the 1st gen tacoma engines in for fuel economy and durability (adapters are even made to mate those engines with a chevy transmission).
Oh, and yes, I'm not rich but can wait until I have enough.

Thanks guys!
Cheers,
Kevin

I don't think you have to be embarrassed about that project. Sounds pretty cool to me!

Why don't you consider the GM 6.5 turbo diesel? I *think* it would be a nearly bolt in affair. AFAIK, the motor mounts and bell housing bolts are the same a chev 350. They are decent motors as far as turbo indirect injection diesels go. Simple and non electronic too. I think the weight is similar to a BBC.

Other than that, I'd recommend Isuzu 4BD1T/4BD2T, or maybe the Cummins 4BT. All available in North America for decent prices.

Once you get into the Toyota Diesels you are looking at big bucks and no real performance advantage. Harder to get parts too.

I forget the name of them, but there is a company in Canada that sells parts for mining trucks and they are an official dealer for Toyota( I believe) I'm sure the other canucks can help you.
But in all honesty, they are so reliable, you just need a supply of filters belts and hoses.
Once you are over the initial purchase cost, they only need oil and filter changes. If the car is more aerodynamic and lighter than a landcruiser, it would probably get very good fuel consumption. They get about 12-13/100litres in a landcruiser.
They love doing about 100-120kph with Landcruiser gearing which is about 2500rpm

Hey GTSSPortCoupe, Thanks for not judging :) haha
I will look into the Isuzu 4BD1T/4BD2T.... people love swapping the 4bt or 6bt. They are heavy but very durable from my online readings and they have many performance mods available. Sadly a rebuilt one is like 7K! But I did find one near me for 2500, but don't know if it needs a rebuild.
I'm leaning on the Om617 or om606 if I couldn't find a comparable toyota diesel.
And just found a post on these forums about a build where someone figured out the front sump oil pan spacing problems (sent him a message! - very excited to hear what he says).

Hey rocsoFJ73,
Oh yes, I looked them up before when I was thinking of getting a used 75 series pickup. But I the one I was look into was pretty rusty and I realized I don't have the money to fix it up and maintain such a rare beast! One day when I build a successful business I will scratch that vehicle off my dream car list! :) hahah
I'm gunna check the classifieds part of ih8mud now, but how much do you think is a used 1hz?

Cheers guys!

We pay about $2000-3000 CAD in Australia with 200000klms average. I saw a good one out of a 105 series for $1500 not long ago with 300000. Being able to see them run or test drive them is a plus. The problem with North American 1HZ is that many have come from the mines.
But you need a gearbox as well and that can add another $1500, although you can make a HJ/BJ60 box work.
Fuel injection pumps can start needing big $$$ once they have done 300000-400000klms

Hey roscoFj73, thanks for the numbers!
I appreciate the time for that :)

Do you know how hard parts are to find for the 3b engine? I see Bj60's for sale once in a while on a online classified website we use in Canada (kijiji)

Cheers!

Oh, yes I found a link where I guy made a website dedicated to his 6.2 (maybe 6.5) swap into his G body (5th gen) El Camino.
I'm seeing mixed feelings on this engine. And there are forums dedicated to 4bt swaps and I don't see many negative views on the OM617 or other merecdes diesel engines.

Do you have any cheery opinions on the 6.5?

Thanks again :)

The advantage is that it is nearly bolt in. I don't have any personal experience with the motors, but I have heard they can be ok when setup right. An El Camino is lighter than an empty pick-up that the engine came in. And you likely won't be doing any towing etc., so the load on the motor will be light. Trick would be finding the right generation of the motor (some years better than others), and finding one in good shape with low mileage. Here is a good read that I found: 6.5 NEWBIES - **START HERE** - Diesel Place : Chevrolet and GMC Diesel Truck Forums

Hey GTSSportCoupe,

Oh yes, that is a very good point, could save me thousands of dollar in shop time!
Ahh, I think I read this a year ago as well when I was researching, the some years are better than others with the detroit diesels.

I read the link now :)

Thanks so much!

Have you considered finding a wrecked Canyon or Colorado with the I4 diesel? Might be a decent swap into an El Camino. I'd swap the engine/transmission as a unit. Or, a wrecked Nissan Titan XD with the Cummins? For cruising and great fuel economy, the I4 would be great. For guts, the Cummins looks good.

Anything is possible with the right amount of money....

Hey thanks for letting me know about these newer engines!
Sadly, I don't have the space, tools or intelligence to do this swap :P hahah, so I would be looking to find a custom/hot rod guy to do the swap and I don't know how much more work it is to use these newer engines.

I like that duramax 2.8L (around 500 pounds, similar to the om617), more horsepower and probably easier to find parts for!
I will keep those too in mind though, for sure!

Cheers :)

Theoretically ,the B engine is still in production ,but its a Hino engine now for trucks and buses only and I doubt many parts would swap over. However, most 3B engine parts are still available because they sold so many of them in various Toyota products.
Look on ebay , lots of 3B parts there

where are you located in canada?
i get 3B,2H,1HZ and 1HDT occationally.

Oh wow, didn't know that roscoFj73! Neat!
A 3b would be fun! If I ever decide on a toyota engine, I can't wait to see the faces at the car shows :P

Hey simonliew, I'm from the GTA (Toronto area) Ontario :)
