What is a hardtop worth?

So I am on the fence regarding keeping the hardtop on my FJ40 or selling it. I am trying to keep the FJ mostly original but would like some updated features (power steering, disk brakes, bucket seats with center console, upgraded front and rear bumpers, and maybe a/c, etc). The FJ is a 1970 and was purchased by my father late 1969 and came with soft top. The hard top and doors were purchased several years later and he believes they are off of a 1973.

The problem I am having is that I live in central FL, aka swamp, and it is muggy 24/7. With a hard top and no a/c it will be a sweat box. I prefer the soft top look and honestly don't think that I would use the hard top. I am struggling with storing this thing and probably never using it verses just parting ways but never being ever to replace if I wanted in the future. If kept, it would have to be suspended from the floor joists in my garage and take up unnecessary room.

If I were to keep, I would need to replace the gaskets, head liner, and rain gutter along with some rust repair. Only major was in the left rear where the body, top and tailgate meet. There are a few very minor spots elsewhere. When sanding the passenger door I discovered body filler and a previous metal repair (by previous owner). The driver door appear to be intact.

I know the side windows are sliders and are not OEM but I may know where the original glass is stored.

I have attached some photos. The other side of the FJ is covered with plywood.

What is the value of these things if I were to sell and are they that hard to find if I wanted one in the future?

On a separate note, in the photo showing the roof rust, what is the L bracket under the folding seat? its about 10 inches long but doesnt seem to assist with the seat at all. My father doesnt recall adding it and believes it may be OEM (he is 74 and memory does not serve him well sometimes).

I have a Hardtop in SO Cal too and I haven't put it on in 2 years I guess the answer is whatever somebody is willing to pay.. Id guess pretty high since sun visors are like 200 bucks lol

I recall someone stating they paid $2500 but by the time they were done repairing they had over 4k in it.

Mine needs a little work but its not a disaster. If parting ways, i just want to be fair and of course, buyer would have to pick it up. I remember how heavy this thing is.

My guess you will get offers for the sliding side windows if your willing to ship. Rusted rain gutter and sides with no shipping might be hard to get much for it. If you had the original soft top, bows and doors would be a much easier sell.

The original side windows are stored in the attic of the house we grew up in which was sold in the late 80's. It has been a hearing aid center since so they may still be up there. Just dont know how I would go about asking to climb up and check. LOL.

If I were to keep and restore along with the FJ, it would probably cost me, give or take, $1500 - $2000, for everything.

nice i have a 69 fst from cali and it does not have the l bracket ,the top is probably a crap shoot finding the right buyer at the right time seems so many people are selling parts these days .but it seems like the few that want the crazy money actuall sell a lot of stuff

I recently sold the sliders out of my seldom used hard top for 250, I wanted the solid glass. I bought the complete top for 75 bucks, in 1983 lol. Go topless!

Agree on the topless; I see you have the Vader light--don't lose it or that will set you back 3-400

No idea exactly how much hard tops are worth but can say a really good one would cost a lot.
I ran a rag top for about eight years while the original hard top sat out side under a cover.
When I went to restore it I thought about a new fiberglass roof.
Priced around and just the roof was more than I paid for my whole vehicle so I invested in some epoxy and redid the old one.
I don't know how old you are Hatcher but if you are under 50 I suggest hanging onto the top if you can.
If you keep the Cruiser any amount of time there may come a point you wished you had kept it.
There are several times I let something go and then kicked myself for it later.

From what I have seen, price depends on condition, location, and sellers desire to regain space after truck was sold or soft top was decided. Have seen them disassembled for 500.00. Infair/good condition - seem to always need fabric for inside roof and some rust repair. Mint condition top 1500 plus.

That’s so cool you spotted that. I had an original Vader light and lost the cover on the Lockwood Creek trail 20 plus years ago. About ten years ago I got Marv at SOR sell me a cover for 30 bucks, as a favor thrown in a pile of parts I was buying. I just saw a complete light go for 400 plus on EBay.

I thot vader = FST. I am frequently wrong.

Mine set me back $350 or so— no biggie— just glad I found unobtainium. I think only on FST and yes we got the tailgate!
