realisticly, TO ME, a dog is like a kid. you spend time with the animal so it learns to trust you, how to read YOUR expresions as well as you his (dogs can't talk but they speak volumns), a bond is created.

a dog is supposed to become your life time friend. a journey started as early as reasonably possible so that bond is there for when times get rough. he is expecting you to look out for him just like you look to him to look out for you. he expects you not to neglect, abuse or abandon him. he will be your faithful companion. remember, YOU picked him, not him you, so you have an obligation to fulfill.

a dog is to be only second to your family.
you wouldnn't chain up your kid and ignore them.
you wouldn't lock your kid in a room and visit once a week or less to say hi.
you wouldn't leave your kid outside in the bitter cold or the sufficating heat.
you wouldn't beat your kid for pooping on the floor.
you wouldn't starve your kid.

of course, to some, a dog is an instrument. a hunting dog, a guard dog, a working dog but does this change how the dog is to be treated? no. a dog is a living trusting animal that thrives on affection, asks little and gives much.

there is a difference between discipline and beating or neglect. a dog raised properly responds to verbal commands but during the training discipline will be needed. does this mean beating with a stick? putting the "boots to him"? starving him?

of course you still have to show you are Alpha dog for the dog to understand and not be confused as to his position in the family pack.

am i wrong in my understanding?

then your fxxxin X's dad poisons your dog with slug bate as you watch her slowly die.

sorry dont mean to kill the party.

what you typed out is cool and very meaningfull. i wish my dog was here now.

damn, i haven't read Jack London in decades... i am going to have to go find one of his books again...

There is no way you wrote that just now. Find an old Jack London paper you wrote in high school? :flipoff2:

that is sad...

death of a dog is a heart wrenching pain that never goes away completely.
sorry for your loss M8.

Wow thats so fxxxing sad. If someone did that to my dog I would lose it.

yep, fsusteve, it will be...
but here is the really hard thing to understand...
each time, i swear i am not going through that pain again... only to buy another... i juat can not be without my 'friend'.

I'm putting our dog down this week, she's been with us for 15 years, this is gonna be the hardest thing I've ever done.

Good luck. We did that in June and I am still not over it. You have to tell yourself that you are doing her a favor by ending the pain. Helps a little.

Are you thinking about doing it yourself?

If so, trust me... that's a scene you can live without.

Had to put my old chow down after 16 years. Man, it hurts.

I weighed all my options, there's no easy way and I don't want to just dump her off at the vet's, so I've got a friend that's going to do it for me. she's gonna be buried in her favorite sitting spot in the yard.

My buddy left in June. Luckily we were at the house and he checked out on his own (Cancer). We also put him in the back yard and oddly enough that has become one of my favorite drinkin' spots.

Still friggin' gets to me.

:frown:

I'm not an emotional guy but I'm getting fxxxed up over this the closer it gets. I was really hoping she'd go in her sleep but I can't wait any longer, she's in a lot of pain and can't walk.

Sorry to hear Steve..:frown:

The day we had to put Harley down, it was raining. Soon as he was gone it stoped and the sun came out. The day I picked up Husker it was raining, when I got home with him it was sunny. I kind of take it as a sign.:meh:

Steve,
i had a Chow i loved dearly and took him to the vet and held him while he went to sleep...
yep, hurt like hell but he was a M8 and i wanted to be there with him to the end...

it is painless and he really did seem to just be sleeping...
(fawk, almost 10 years later and getting all choked up again)
