I was recently pulling down small trees with the cruiser and noticed a loud grinding noise when I really got on it. It is fine driving day to day but if I really need to get on the gas it makes a loud grinding noise for a short time that sounds like it is coming from way up front. I don't believe it is a transmission problem. Any ideas?

Are you in 4wd? Are you in LOW? If it is grinding when you are in low it could be the motor mounts. We need more info.

It still could be your motor mounts. With the drivers side mount broken, when the engine is torqued it lifts off, and the radiator fan hits the fan shroud. Check the fan blades to see if they're worn at the tips...

That sounds a lot like what I was experiencing when my harmonic balancer separated. I would think that would be rare, but easy enough to check.

Does it sounds when you torque the truck? like when you have to accelerate fast or something like that? because if it is then it's definitly an engine mount broken
let us know

Thanks for the help. I feel a little better knowing it could be that instead of something internal. How hard is it to fix a motor mount? I am going to check right now. Now that I think about it it also makes the noise on big bumps or pot holes.

The driver side is easy and is the one that lets the engine move up, the pass side one has lots more in the way but usually does not need to be replaced.

I have experienced a similar noise in the 60 on the last trip to Moab this spring. I had it in 4lo and no noise until I really got on it. I rebuilt the front and rear ends with new gears, bearings, etc. My mind immediately went to the worst case scenario of chewed up gears, but every thing seemed fine with the axle. I had notice that the t-case and tranny shifters would move way over to the right when I would get on the gas. I suspect that I have the same problem. I gonna check it out when I get home this weekend.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that this is the problem. I put too much $$ and time into getting those axles rebuilt/upgraded to have one go south on me after the first trip.

yah thats probably it. usually the shifters will pop out and you go form 4h to 2h that quick

I checked out the motor mounts yesterday and sure enough, the rubber block is cracked in half on the drivers side. Would that be causing my problem? Also, the fan is chewed up on the ends. Thanks so much for everyones help thus far.

The front driver's is the one that commonly breaks. You can use it temporarily by wrapping it with a piece of chain, and securing the chain with a long bolt that you use to tighten up the whole thing. I got through a whole trip that way. I also replaced the rear when I put in the new tranny, but the old one was still OK, just oil soaked and not trustworthy.

The noise under torque is usually the fan pushing up into the shroud and making an aweful grinding noise. The motor mount can be a PIA to replace-the trick is getting the motor high enough, or removing the mounting ear from the engine block.
