Rebuilt a core ps gearbox I had laying around and finally swapped it onto the truck. No more leaky 80 series. Things been leaking since I moved to Colorado in 2015, been dripping for years but finally started pissing. Not a bad job when you've done it as many times as I have.

Had a short but nice conversation w the PO this week down the road in Amsterdam. He had it on consignment when I bought it, so I didn’t get to speak w him directly. Was a nice to get some more history of course. He purchased it in the mid 90’s locally. It had a lift kit and large tires. He told me about how he took it back to stock suspension, found some oem 15” white wagon wheels, and set it up that way but eventually wanted a bit more clearance so went with 16”s. Other little things about hunting with and out of the rig, replacing clutch and throw out bearing, radiator, and generally reliving some memories, until you notice four years have gone by and you haven’t driven it. He is mailing me his service records. I look forward to getting those and seeing more maintenance history. The rig is an 82 and I found some items from the original owner (Helena) in there as well (paycheck and McDonald’s coupon from 85). Tracked him down but he’s passed away. Spoke w his elderly mother and she shared some nice memories about him exploring the mountains with it and eventually selling for a p/u truck. Some fun, respectful sleuthing, piecing together history of the rig :)

Yahoo  , I finally finished sanding, painting and reinstalled my license plate holder today. It only took me about 2 plus years from start to finish.

More to come, I took out my rear heater today then took it apart to refinish it too. I will post before and after pictures when I am finished with it. I want to start driving this thing this summer so I am getting s*** done now!

@bagochips76 got a new Rhinorack batwing and the new ARB Baserack on his R2.8 FJ60 but ARB doesn't make mounts for the Batwing so I made some for him. Little bit of CAD, add a touch of superheated ionized air, some hot glue from the miller.... End product, bomber awning mounts

Summer is coming fast and we're scrambling to get our own rigs ready for it. Polly and my plan is to camp 30 nights this summer. After making those I started shaving my already low pro roof rack that I made years ago to be even more low pro. Bars will be about 1/4" from the roof. Something new is coming but by doing this the overall height of my 80 will be unchanged. Forgot how the 80 looks without a roof rack, looks very naked. Also took stock of the last parts needed for my on board air V3 and diagnosed my steering wander, panhard bushings...

Before, during, and after photos would be awesome! My rear heater has been loose under the drivers seat per the previous owner. I'm swapping my water pump in the next couple weekends and figured I'd service the rear heater and get it properly mounted while I've got the system drained. If you happen to know the size and type of fasteners to mount the rear heater that would help too. Thanks!

Hello! My rear heater unit sits directly behind my center console in the rear. There are two factory mounting holes with nuts welded underneath. You can see the two holes in the floor in the picture I attached with the screwed in chrome bolts sticking up. If it is the same as mine this is where sits, I have never seen a heater like mine mounted under a seat? If it is like mine maybe the person that owned it before you did not know and just through it under the seat? Let me know what you have and I hope this helped. Thx, Tom

My trucks PO replaced the heater lines to the rear heater at some point and then just left it loose under the drivers seat. The lines are actually too short to reach the OE mounting position, so I'm going to have to replace the lines while it's drained. My floor is slightly different from yours. I don't have the access panel, but the heater mounts in the same location. Are they M6 fasteners to mount the heater? Are both heater lines the same size?

No access panel in mine, the nuts are welded underneath the floor from the factory as I assume yours would be too. Yes both H20 lines are the same size, not sure on the bolt sizes. You are welcome to come by and check it out if you would like, I am on south 19th about four miles south of Main street. Let me know!

the differences between the 2 of you is @TommyGuns has a 79 with the tank below th body and @pigmony has a 78 listed which would have the tank in the cab. the access panel is for the fuel level sending unit access in the 79
the heater itself is the same between the 2 years, the hard pipes from firewall to heater would be different as the floors are different

Thx 3_puppies for explaining and yes I do have an access panel, I missed it in the picture LOL!!

Hey Drew! I tried to PM you but you are full so I hope you see this!!

I am working on getting 40 rolling so I can drive it this summer. I am stuck on the windshield wipers not working. The PO gave me a new wiper motor because he said the old one was no good, so I went to replace it and I have NO power going into the wiper switch with the ignition key turned on? I checked the fuse box and all of the fuses light up, do you know anything about 40 wiring?

Thx, Tom 406-579-5269

pretty sure that was your LX down at the mammoth campground Sunday am. Ive been skiing in Yellowstone most weekends since snow. Passed your rig Sunday am on my way up.

No I just flu back into town from being out of state for about 80 days. So, not my LX, an impostor LOL!! Did it have 37" tires on it?

Tom, the wiper wiring is backwards from what you think. the switch controls the ground not the positive. the positive goes right to the wiper motor. the ground thru the switch controls the speeds.
so you will not get + at the switch.
there is also another connection in the glove compartment? there is a short pigtail from the main harness to the wiper motor thru the windshield frame.

Yep. That was us. We skied Tower Saturday and had to get off the trail as some Bison were coming up the other way. So cool.

We're awful lucky to have such a great resource on this forum. Do you happen to know off the top of your head what size the two mounting screws are to attach the rear heater to the floor?
