Did some wrenching in a parking lot (other than at Napa for once). Then drove on some rocks. :steer:

The family fixed a broken lug nut, bent parking brake hold down pin and torn retainer on the 470. Never seen a torn retainer before.

Finally got the diamond plating off. Sheared one bolt on the muffler heat shield. Now for adhesive clean up and prep for rust repair. The bed will need a fair amount of work, along w drivers floorboard. Passenger floorboard looking good so far. I’ll get them all cleaned up today for closer inspection.

Ya man. Fins and things. I love Moab too! So much to do around there. We spent the week boondocking in the sticks. We need to do a 406 Cruiser club run to Moab.

CM21! Lets GOOOOO!

Put a 2.5" lift and 35's on the lexus. Put new recovery points on, but was too lazy to put the factory bumper back on before searching for a christmas tree.View attachment 2518397

35’s and 80’s go together like peanut butter and jelly. Looks great.

Got a new camping hand wash station from my father in law. When not in use all fits into the lower 5 gallon bucket. I’ve used scepter cans for a long time with a spot. I have to say this is way more efficient. Holds 10L when In storage mode.

Yeah you did!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So rad, details man, details!

72' ish?
Been looking for a new project to start with my son. He said FJ40, first gen Scout, or Willys. I was open to any of those, but of course preferred a 40 over the others. It's a '71 and came from Great Falls area, and more importantly fit our budget. (Even Scouts are getting ridiculously spendy.) It was driven regularly until the last few years. Mostly complete. F engine serial number matches the age of the VIN, so it appears it's original to the vehicle. Sticker on the bumper from Malmstrom dates to '97. So it has been a Montana rig for a while. Rust in common places. Oil everywhere else. Runs and drives, all lights work, 4 wheel drive appears to work. Idles crappy. I don't know much more about it. We intend to keep original, but I have no plans for a restoration. Just a cool rig to add to the pack and enjoy. We'll dig into it more this weekend and baseline what we've got. I'm gonna need a lesson in 40s though. I'm sure you guys that are long time 40 owners can spot little (or big) things that I may have overlooked or should keep tabs on.

Are you gonna post a pile of photos or are you going to make us beg?

40 pics

Thanks for the nudge to post up pics. Link above. (I see you've already found it!)
I was on the fence about creating a thread, but probably makes sense. I'm gonna have a ton of newb questions.

The driver's door lock on my 40 wasn't allowing me to get the key in, so I took that all apart and found that one of the brass wafers in the lock core was mangled. I removed that wafer and the spring that goes with it, so now it's a 5 wafer rather than 6 wafer lock and one key still works for the ignition, both doors, and the gas hatch. It looks like these locks would be really easy to rekey if you had the wafers. (which I think are available online)

Then I started working on the rear ambulance door. I've never had the key to the rear lock, so I figured I'd get it torn apart and replace it with a new lock core. Yeah, that's what I figured. The previous owner had stripped the threads on the exterior latch handle and "fixed" it with a lock nut. So, I ended up having to cut the threaded portion of the exterior latch handle to get it all apart. After that it was pretty easy to get everything disassembled. It would be pretty tragic to drop anything into the door while disassembling as there is no easy way to retrieve stuff without taking the door off and shaking.

I got to looking at the latch handle and with the threads mangled I figured I could just cut the threaded portion off, file it flat, and drill and tap it to make a nice repair. It was all going real well too. I was almost done drilling my pilot hole when my carbide bit snapped off below flush.

So, I ordered a new exterior latch handle and a new rear lock core for more money than I had hoped to spend. They'll be here in a couple weeks and all my door locks will be functional again.
