What year is your truck and which heat shield are you talking about?

What he said. You may want to add it to your signature line. Click on "User CP" in the uppper left corner.

I have a 92 FJ80 with rattling catalytic converter heat shields. I wrapped baling wire around the heat shield, then twisted them until they were taut. It eliminated 95% of the noise. OTOH, it could be worn-out catalytic converters that are causing the rattling noise, in which case replacement is the fix.

And welcome aboard!

heres the deal. i looked for the noise. i kicked the catalytic converter and nothing, no rattle nothing. so i looked under and found that on the opposite side of my 91 fj80 there is another heat shield located front drivers side, right under the drivers door. that, whatever it is called is the culprit. if i put bailing wire around it it will shake. i think i will take the cover off and go with it. if there are any better ideas let me know.

There should be two bolts that you can use a combination wrench to tighten, if you are referring to the vertical plate of metal directly under the driver's door sill.

I would caution against removing a heat shield. Manufacturers tend to put them in place to avoid having their customers going up in smoke.

thanks for the help. i have no idea what is going on. i think maybe there is something i am not considering here, but i just cant think of what it might be. maybe if i sleep on it. i got the shocks and it runs well it just rattles now, so there is no telling what could have happened.
