Anyone know what this hole in the driver's side floor carpet is for? Should it have a plug of some kind? I can't seem to find anything in any of the on-line parts diagrams.

Seems an odd place for such a hole, right where there could be plenty of dirt and moisture.

Plastic hook used to hold a factory floor mat in place so the mat doesn't move and press on the accelerator pedal, causing an accident.

Thank you. That makes sense. That occurred to me, but thought otherwise since there’s just the one hole off to one side instead of two holes or one on the center.

It was an unlisted option available on Premium 1997 80 Series only, very few were imported into the US, now NLA and highly sought after. ;)

Thanks. Nice to know I have a highly sought after hole in my carpet. Makes all the expenses with this truck somehow more worth it.

It's not the hole that makes it valuable, it's what goes into the hole. o_O

I couldn't find that retainer clip as a separate Toyota part (does it exist?)
but did find aftermarket clips for a Toyota Camry that may fit.

FWIW: There was a Toyota recall in 2009 for floor mats that might slip forward and get trapped on/under the accelerator pedal:

I used a plastic body plug to secure my weather tech mats to the floor. I had to drill a hole in my new mat to match.
It keeps the mat secure and from my big feet hooking on it and pushing it around.

I solved it by not having floor mats and installing a rubber floor. :) I figured it works for old work pickups and fj cruisers, why not for the 80.

I actually use an aftermarket rubber floor mat with a lip around the outer edge that holds dirt, sand, water, and which doesn't slide around due to it's design.

My 1996 80 has them (build date 2/96). Almost every junk yard 80 I've seen has had this clip. Maybe I'll start grabbing them for
my new "side hustle."
😂😂
