What does "normal" winch operation sound like?

My truck came with an M12000 which I haven't really used yet. I rebuilt it with new grease and have been troubleshooting some pesky solenoid issues.

Last night I spooled the winch line out to an anchor vehicle up a slope to test out the auto load holding brake since I had disassembled the winch.

I wound in the winch going up hill and then released the trigger switch. The truck rolled backward 6 or 12 inches and then there was a clanking mechanical sound and the truck stopped rolling backwards. Clearly that was the winch brake engaging. Is it supposed to make a loud sound?

Truck shouldn't roll back at all, the brake and gears should hold it where you stop winding the cable.
