Yeah my dog eats better than me too...

I second the Nutro's for large breed, that is what my Rottie, his mom and his sister have been raised on and his mom is now 7 1/2 and my dog is 5.

Eric feeds his a couple small neighborhood children a week. :flipoff2:

My greyhound gets Natural Balance. If it's good enough for Dick van Patten, it's good enough for him! Seriously, over the last couple of years, we transitioned him into about a dozen different dog foods (from Nutro to fancy Timberwolf food which costs a ton of $$$) and this is the only thing that sits well with him right now. Mine's a finicky eater. He does get the occasional plain chicken breast but that's about it for human food.

Question for Eric: What do you think about dogs having a diet of half kibble and half raw food. A little of each each day? Any advantages at all or does the kibble ruin the benefits of the raw? I'm thinking I'd like to see how he does on raw food (and I understand all the reasons behind giving it to a dog) but I also take my dog on a ton of roadtrips and there's simply no easy way to lug a ton of raw food around when I'm driving around or camping or whatever. So I'd also like to keep him on kibble so his stomach doesn't go nutso when I go from raw/kibble to just kibble. Make sense? Yeah, I could use this as an excuse to buy a Norcold and dual batteries, but the dog is already spoiled enough...

science diet light for large breeds..i got a chubby lab....plus my wife works for them for the past 20 years...we get a reall good deal!

My Dachshund was on the Nutro puppy formula and did great, but when we tried to switch to the Nutro adult food, he s*** blood. Not cool. We put him back on the puppy formula and he firmed back up in a matter of days.

We just transitioned him into Blue Buffalo for the last couple bags. Supposed to be as good or better than Nutro. Total organic hippy dog food. No fillers and a variety of protein sources. His weight is great, very muscle-bound, great coat, good poop, etc. Vet says he's one of the healthiest looking Dachshunds she's ever seen.

Science Diet. The Father in law is a Vet and he recommends the stuff. It works pretty good. They make a broad spectrum of food for various dog types. You can get the stuff at PETCO.

There are a lot of other good brands out there though. You are pretty safe going with anything from Purina to Science Diet. Try a variety and see what your dog prefers. You can buy it in small bags until you find the best choice. My dog was too hyper, so I took him off the high energy stuff and got him the older dog mellow stuff. He also does better with smaller kibbles (they offer them both ways) as he's a French Bulldog, not a Great Dane. I also like to occasionally mix in some canned food with the dry kibble stuff for variety. He likes that. An occasional Milk Bone helps to keep the teeth clean.

Avoid table food as it's way too fatty and remember that chocolate can kill dogs. It's toxic to them. Have fun.

By the way, Bull Penis is always a big hit.

dont give the dog science diet!!!

costco, science diet and any other food that can be at the vet or a pet store are all garbage. they are full of fillers and the only reason that some vets carry it is to profit from it. it is like a dentist giving out candy at halloween so he can make money filling cavities. go with a all natural food that is organic, it will cost you a bit more but you will have a healthier dog and save on vet bills in the long run. a new one that is good is timberwolforganics.com it has everything that your dog needs to stay healthy. the nice thing about this is there are five different types ranging from elk, bison, venison to one high in fish. they all have the same essientials but are different flavors so you can switch without upsetting the dogs stomach. their web site also talks a bit about raw diets which they also believe in. just a note, our friends two 3 year old bulldog which ate eukanuba died of cancer and my parents lab that ate science diet died of cancer at a young age as well.

Pedigree Large Breed for Barney at 8 cups a day and Pedigree adult for Betty at 2 cups a day. They both love green tomatoes and carrots and green beans. Barney is some kind of goat, he eats the limbs off of our dogwood tree, lilacs, rosebushes, snowball tree and the other shrubs. He also seems to liek milk jugs. :)

Sometimes, thet get a soup bone.

Let it out twice a day to scavenge from your neighbors' garbage. They'll be readily attracted to what's best for them.

At least that seems to have been my former neighbor's theory. Otherwise experiment and see what your dog works best on. The Newfie gets by on other stuff, but runs really well on Eukanuba Large breed. The Zia dog has gone through a variety of foods, including us making it, and has settled on Petsmart's house brand of lamb and something. She'd rather have the meatier canned stuff, but it really doesn't suit her well.

California Natural. It's really good for them - recomended by our vet and a couple of trainers... Hard to find though.

We feed Nutro Ultra Homeopathic. Dog likes it, won't eat anything else.

All natural, number 1 ingredient is meat, no byproducts, no preservatives, no corn, something like 27% protein....

We do not feed canned food. My wife buys one of the $10 plastic tubes of cheap hamburger meat at the store, mixes it with garlic, red cabbage and the dog gets that atop her dry once a day. (the recipe for the beef/garlic/red cabbage came from the vet.)

My dog likes what she eats, and is the healthiest dog I've ever known. She's energetic, happy, gret skin and coat, and has no health problems whatsoever.

Typical B.S. and propaganda. Just because large chains carry Science Diet does not mean that it is unhealthy. By the way, Vets sell dog food to help dogs, not just to make profit. They can sell any brand they want for profit. They sell Science Diet because they offer a broad based, well made line that represents different ages and health needs. Large companies have the resources to conduct quality R&D and are usually not in the business to produce garbage in an extremely competitive market. Most of these people love dogs and want to help them.

By the way, just because your dog eats Eukanuba or Science Diet and gets cancer, doesn't mean anything. Your parent's Lab may have eaten Science Diet and gotten cancer, yet that has nothing to do with the fact that Mom and Dad smoke 10 packs a day around the dog, live next door to a Toxic Waste Dump, and the dog loves to lick lead paint off of the 40 year old porch columns.

Saying that the dog food is the causation of cancer is uniformed, slanderous, and ignorant. By the way, raw meat is not always the best diet. Dogs will eat grass to help them digest. Properly made dog food will have fiber and other materials you call "fillers" to aid in digestion.

The Natural Difference
Science Diet® Nature's Best™ was created specifically for pet owners wishing to feed their pets a great tasting, high quality, natural* product.

Many pet foods use natural ingredients, but their ingredients are preserved with artificial preservatives. What makes Nature's Best™ unique is that all of the individual ingredients that comprise the finished product are preserved naturally.

Multiple Animal Proteins Are Better
Meat, listed as the first ingredient on a pet food label, does not indicate the quality or quantity of meat protein in a product. In fact, a combination of multiple animal protein sources produces a better quality of protein than any single animal protein source. Science Diet® Nature's Best™ brand pet food uses three animal protein sources (Beef, Chicken, or Ocean Fish combined with Chicken Meal and Dried Egg), plus vegetable proteins to provide optimal protein quality. Science Diet® Nature's Best™ provides a nutritional profile optimized for puppies and adult dogs, kittens and adult cats. That's why veterinarians choose Science Diet® brands to feed their own pets.

Balance of Amino Acids Drives Protein Quality
More protein is not better. It is the quality of protein in a product that is important. That is why Science Diet® Nature's Best™ uses multiple animal protein sources. Protein comes from two sources, animal and vegetable, and is the source of essential and non-essential amino acids. Essential amino acids are not naturally produced by your pet and must be supplied by its food. The quality of protein is based on its ability to deliver essential amino acids to your pet, not on the source of the protein. In simpler terms, the right balance of amino acids determines the quality of protein.

High-quality Ingredients Deliver High-quality Nutrition
It is necessary to use high-quality ingredients to achieve high-quality nutrition in pet foods. Many pet foods contain protein sources with excessive ash, phosphorous, calcium, and magnesium. Filtering and excreting these excess nutrients can be hard on your pet's kidneys. In fact, kidney failure is the number one cause of non-accidental death in cats and the number two cause in dogs. At Hill's Pet Nutrition, we select and carefully formulate the highest quality ingredients to ensure the highest quality nutrition for your pet's health.

I'm also sure that Eukanuba invests thousands of dollars to produce cancer causing dog food. Yeah right.

Small scale organic dog food producers are not always the best. They approach the problem with a "natural is better" philosophy, without using the science of overall nutrition to adapt to the individual dog, breed, and age. Hey, throw the dog a raw elk, venison, or beef steak. Dogs like meat! Sure, but they need other balanced nutrients, fibers, minerals, and vitamins.

Most small scale producers lack laboratories, clinical studies, and teams of qualified Vets to do research. There are some good small scale outfits and Timberwolf looks like they make a good product, but I wouldn't be so quick to discredit the large brands.

I've got an akita that is rather sensitive to bloat issues and the only kibble I'd consider feeding him is Canidae. That's at the advice of the rescue group I got him from, I personally couldn't speak for the rationale beyond that, but it's another option to consider.
