Only have a picture of it on my 4Runner, but it looks pretty much the same on our GX. I picked the swing out from Kurt that goes to the left so I can open the GX barn door with no worries.

Have you considered any roof racks? Most quality bikes these days are pretty light unless they're e-bikes or bikes from K-Mart or Costco.
Then you never have to worry about what you're backing up into!
Just be mindful of garages... ask me how I know.

If you had the bike flipped around, would there be enough clearance between the door and the handlebars while open?

Hmm I think that would depend on the bike... I think so, but haven't tried.
