which auto transmission do i have ?

i have a 1990 hdj80, vx sahara 4.2 t/d auto.
i would like to know what gearbox it is, is it a440 or a442. is it hydraulic. was there any changes to the box in that year as it was the first year of the 80 series. any feedback much appreciated.

anyone ?????

Look on your ID plates or sticker for: C/Tr A/Tm.

That's Color, Trim, Axle and Transmission...

Whatever's in the Tm slot...

check driver door for a sticker like on this picture and there you will see a/tm............
door sticker.webp

thanks for your replies. i know about the plates that give that information, my problem is i have not got my car with me. it is at an auto transmission mechanic at the moment. the gearbox and torque converter were rebuilt by a well known auto trans mechanic here in Australia (Melbourne ) and now i cant tow my caravan because of overheating problems. the gearbox had never overheated before.
the reason it needed a rebuild was because it finally packed it in by not going into any gear, NOT OVERHEATING like it does now. oil spewing out when hot and the smell of burnt oil and clutches all through the car, never had that before. he reckons that this gearbox has a bad problem with overheating while towing, never had a problem before (9 years towing 2000-2500kg) that is why i need to know whether it is an a440f or a442f . was the a442f hydraulic then later on electric, say by 1992 ???.
thanks to everyone who can answer

as i know early models of 80 were equiped with A442F - hydrolic, after 1992-93 there where A442F with electrical managment (so there where 2 models of A442F 1) fully hydro 2) with electric managment

I have fully hydrolic, A442F trans, (you can chek it with puting the stick in second gear, if it starts directly from 2nd it is a442f hydro,---
if it will start from 1st gear than 2nd, it will be earlier model(after 92/93) of A442F)

In my knoledge the A440F were instaled only on 60-series but I am not realy sure. maybe some 80-series which were for middle east market?....

the difference that i know of A440F and A442F is torque converter size (440 had a smaler t-converter) toyota changed it for a442f to prevent overheating problems...

After repairing it will be better to install/add bigger cooling radiator for transmission if towing heavy loads, especialy in hot climat region.

Hope it will help

91' - 92' US Spec FJ80's have the fully hydraulic A440F transmission.
