I think I may have found the answer: Gen 4 4runner won't shift into 2 or D

"take the center console off and was ripping into the shifter assembly. Anyway it turns out there is a sensor that detects when you put the tranny into 4th and 1st. The spring had flicked off this sensor. Repositioned the spring and everything worked perfectly again. Not more than 1.5hrs worth of work."

While a different vehicle, it may be applicable to the 100. "Rip into the shifter assembly" and see what you can find :D:wrench:

let us know if that ends up being the fix. very interesting.

so I am trying to do it right now but can't find the spring in the shifter assembly. Does anyone know how deep I need to keep removing stuff to find what this thread says, "So I decided to take a look myself. 15 minutes later I had the center console off and was ripping into the shifter assembly. Anyway it turns out there is a sensor that detects when you put the tranny into 4th and 1st. The spring had flicked off this sensor. Repositioned the spring and everything worked perfectly again. According to a parts diagram there are two switches, one on each side of the selector, I havent got a 5speed so I am not much help, but it does sound like a selector/switch problem.

I'm thinking you're going to want to grab the service manual download in the FAQ. The transmission section has a page dedicated to the explosion of the shifter assembly that should help to point you in the right direction...

I want to give a big thanks to @Aussiecruiser82 for helping me step by step through fixing it. His thread was the one that I posted earlier in which his car did the same thing

Did you find the spring? Any chance you took some pics for those of us that are picture dependent?

Hey Guys.. so i finally got myself a 2000 LC with 140k miles. I was just doing some baselining of the car. I noticed that when I am at around 80mph my RPM's are around 2800-3000? Is that what I should be getting at 80?

I forget what RPM's i had at 70, since i didnt drive in 70 as much I did at 80.
